US eases military trade restrictions on Sri Lanka
Jon Grevatt, Bangkok - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
06 May 2016

The United States government has eased long-standing military trade restrictions imposed on Sri Lanka, the US Department of State's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) has announced.

The DDTC confirmed on 4 May that licensing restrictions on defence exports to Sri Lanka had been lifted and that it will now review licence applications on a case-by-case basis.

The sanctions previously imposed on Sri Lanka were outlined in US appropriations acts in response to Sri Lanka's civil war, which started in the early 1980s and ended in 2009. The sanctions prohibited the use of US assistance to support defence exports but excluded transfers of equipment or services related to demining, disaster relief, and aerial and maritime surveillance.

What significance it holds for Sri Lanka. Maybe another retired coast guard cutter or a transport plane may find a home.

China is the biggest supplier of arms and ammunition to Sri Lanka. Most of the equipment Sri Lankan military posses are either Chinese made of compatible with Chinese ammunition. There is no way that US could wrestle the Chinese influence in Sri Lanka unless they completely replace the Sri Lankan military inventory with NATO specified equipment.

Its not Us will directly supply weapon or not but lifting of restriction means the US embargo is lifted . This lifting is not done simply it has inherited purposes

Its about time but not surprsing consdering Sri Lankan Militray have been have excersises with US military and improving military to militray ties in these two years.
The US allowed Sri Lanka to indirectly get High-tech US technologies through Israel without any oppsition but now we will have greater access to American weapons and Technologies.
I hope sri Lanka will be able to get some Extra MRAPs from US forces used in Afghanistan at a lower cost we currently lack good MRAP still using Buffels from late 80s and its SL variants both are pretty useless in modern day combat specially new IEDs and tactics appearing Middle East.
There are a lot of American weapons and equipment that will be really useful for SL from guns ,vehicles to electronics.

There will be significant changes to SL military and boost our capabilities but we are also looking to sign deals with Russia in the next years so Sri Lankan militray inventory will not be dominated with US weapons. We still rely too much on old Soviet junk with some made in China but still they are outdated and not even used by russia or china anymore
