US drone strike kills Mullah Nazir: Sources – The Express Tribune

ISLAMABAD: A US drone strike killed Taliban commander Maulvi Nazir Wazir, also known as Mullah Nazir, his deputy and eight others in Wana, intelligence sources and tribal leaders said Thursday.
Nazir from the Wazir tribe, was killed on Wednesday night when missiles struck a house in Angoor Adda, near the capital of Wana, South Waziristan, near the Afghan border, seven intelligence sources and two residents from his tribe said.
His deputy, Ratta Khan, was also killed, three sources said.
He favoured attacking American forces in Afghanistan rather than Pakistani soldiers in Pakistan, a position that put him at odds with some other Pakistan Taliban commanders.
Nazir was wounded in a bombing in November, widely believed to be as a result of his rivalries with other Taliban commanders.
Shortly after the bombing, his Wazir tribe told the Mehsud tribe, related to Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud, to leave the area.
The Pakistani army has clawed back territory from the Taliban since launching a military offensive in 2009.
Intensified drone strikes have also killed many senior Taliban leaders, including Mehsud’s predecessor, Baitullah Mehsud, in 2009.
Drone strikes have dramatically increased since US President Barack Obama took office. There were only five drone strikes in 2007, peaking at 117 in 2010, then down to 46 last year.
Most of the strikes hit militants although civilians have also been killed. Rights groups say that some residents are so afraid of the strikes they don’t want to leave their homes.
Data collected from news reports by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism say that between 2,600-3,404 Pakistanis have been killed by drones, of which 473-889 were reported to be civilians.
It is difficult to verify civilian casualties because Taliban fighters often seal off the sites of drone strikes immediately.
Some Pakistanis say the drone strikes are an infringement of their national sovereignty and have called for them to stop.
Others, including some residents of the tribal areas along the Afghan border, say they are killing Taliban commanders who have terrorized the local population.

Blasphemy ; Looks like the "patrai" was placed on the wrong kind-of Taliban. Wonder who is next in line of the Good Taliban : Mullah Baradar or Jalaluddin Haqqani himself.

. .
i'm dead against all the faction of Talibans, but what makes me wonder is that US is drone attacking the faction which have a peace agreement with PAK....

Not really.. They are attacking the factions that are attacking them in Afghanistan.

. .
It requires accurate intelligence tips, if they got one on haqani, he will be dead meat too. Drones do not discriminate....

Did Baitullah Mehsud have a peace agreement with Pak ? Or did the IMU leader Tahir Yuldashev have a peace accord ? The US drone policy is "The only Good Taliban is a Dead Taliban".

oh really why they are into talk with diff factions????? the disturbing part is the US is drone attacking the factions which have agreement with PAK & are not involve into anti Pak activities..... why dont the US drone attack the anti PAK elements hiding in Afgh, if it policy is as u mentioned ""The only Good Taliban is a Dead Taliban"", US is jus defending it interest, so is PAK with having peace agreement... but by attacking these factions US is only making thing worse for PAK..

That is why it is said the state religion of Pakistan is Denial. The CIA folks there are neither as esteemed as the Water Car Engineers produced in PacLand nor as gullible to be taken in by the wrong patrai. Mehsud was killed as a quid-pro-quo by CIA simply because Mehsud like Mullah Nazir was sheltering and organizing training camps for folks from AQ which were being financed and run by the Haqqanis. Unfortunately, Nazir had a sheltering problem, as each of his "sheltered people" were slaughtered one-by-one by the National Bird of Pakistan aka the Drones.

I can give you hundreds of Taliban fighters who have been killed in Drone strikes involved in Anti-Pak activities. The lines blurry as the US is sworn to take out AQ, but the Nazir and the Baradar group have been instrumental in sheltering, supporting and training AQ members who massacre on either side of the border. You should read on the background of the formation of Shura-e-Murakeba and its after effects it had on the NATO forces. The current wave of strikes is CIA's counter-offensive against the Shura starting from Al-Libi. If Hakemullah is spotted, then he will be next. If Baradar is released by PA, then he will be next. So do not go on a wild goose chase looking for the pro-Pak and Anti-Pak Taliban.

Well apparently he was in peace-treaty with Pakistan. How do Pakistanis see this drone strike?

Drones are our biggest ally in this brutal, tiring war....

What if U.S military didn't have the drones at their disposal? Things would've been pretty ugly for all the parties involved. :fie:

Thats what most people who oppose drones don't understand. Lets face it, our own army has been hesitant at best in dealing with this threat.

These drones are the only line of defense we have against these animals. I for one am hoping to see many more of such stories in the future.

ISLAMABAD: A US drone strike killed a Taliban commander, his deputy and eight others in northwest Pakistan, intelligence sources and tribal leaders said Thursday, weeks after he was wounded in a bomb attack believed to have been launched by Taliban rivals.

Maulvi Nazir Wazir, also known as Mullah Nazir, was killed on Wednesday night when missiles struck a house in Angoor Adda, near the capital of Wana, South Waziristan, near the Afghan border, intelligence sources and residents said.

His deputy, Ratta Khan, was also killed, sources said.

Nazir favoured attacking American forces in Afghanistan rather than Pakistani soldiers in Pakistan, a position that put him at odds with some other Pakistan Taliban commanders but earned him a reputation as a "good" Taliban among some in the Pakistan military.

The military has a large base in Wana, where Nazir and his men were based. Residents said the main market in Wana shut down on Thursday to mark Nazir's death.

Nazir was wounded there in a bombing in November, widely believed to be a result of his rivalries with other Taliban commanders. Six others were killed in the same bombing.

Both the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban draw support from ethnic Pashtuns, who live on both sides of the Afghan-Pakistani border. Rivalry between militant factions often reflects old rivalries between Pashtun tribes.

Shortly after the bombing, Nazir's Wazir tribe told the Mehsud tribe, related to Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud, to leave the area. Hakimullah Mehsud's men frequently target the Pakistani army.

Intensified US drone strikes have killed many senior Taliban leaders, including Mehsud's predecessor, Baitullah Mehsud, in 2009.

Drone strikes have dramatically increased since US. President Barack Obama took office. There were only five drone strikes in 2007. The number of strikes peaked at 117 in 2010 and climbed down to 46 last year.
