US develops supercomputer to beat China's Tianhe-2
Posted: 17 Apr 2015
The United States plans to outclass China'ssupercomputer, and it is now looking for a few good semiconductor architectures to help fulfil its ambition.

The fastest supercomputer in the world is currently the Chinese Tianhe-2 running at a peak of 55petaflops on Intel Xeon and Xeon Phi processors. The Collaboration of Oak Ridge, Argonne and Lawrence Livermore (CORAL) project financed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) aims to one-up the Chinese with up to 200petaflops systems by 2018. The three systems, named Summit, Aurora and Sierra, respectively, have also pitted IBM/Nvidia and their graphics processing units (GPUs) against Intel/Cray's massively parallel x86 (Xeon Phi) architecture.

"Over 100 experts were involved in picking two different architectures as mandated by the CORAL request for proposals," the director of science for the National Centre for Computational Sciences at Oak Ridge National Labs, Jack Wells, told EE Times. "Two locations, Oak Ridge and Livermore, were chosen to go with IBM, and Argonne was chosen to use Intel processors."

Tell me some use case in ANY field of science which can be done in say the fastest supercomputer (which is Tianhe -2 ?) but not in the second or third fastest one ? If the first one take an hour probably the second fastest one will take minutes more. At those humongous scale of processing power record books hardly matter rather we are investing in engg streams which specialize in leveraging those computing power in diff aspects of everyday life !

whats the use of this fast supercomputers? I mean we don't have supercomps faster than those of US but still could send space vehicles in space and do protein modelling research:confused:

for processing Billion terabyte data in seconds. Space applications, meteorological, geological , engineering , solving complex equations, etc..

Any school of science where some sort of modelling has to be simulated which has partial differential equations, you get more accurate results faster with a super computer. Eg like people doing research in earthquake engg, Big data mining and forecasting, RNA mutations etc !

Can you make 5th gen fighter jet? There are still many things India cant do like soft landing on moon, make a Large sized continental cargo plane and MIRV miniature nuke warhead and super heavy rocket.

Or we can say is, they are taking a much much longer time than others have taken just because the super computing phenomenon hasn't caught up there yet !

we can do anything we want, our chandrayan mission landed on moon, Agni 5 is MIRV capable missile and GSLV mk iii is our super heavy rocket. in future we will build even more powerful rocket and preparations are in full swing for our manned space mission.

if china can do anything with its supercomputer then why did chinese mars mission crashed in pacific ocean?

People dont realised the important significant of these super computer comtribution. There are not build for just chest thumping or bragging. Do you know Tianhe -2A is a project initial by defense technology university of China? More or less tells you what kind of project will it works on.

That's a Russian rocket crashed, China has a very reliable successful rate on launching rockets. You don't do that much, so you don't really know.

LOL.. Landed on moon? More like crash landing on moon surface. Do you know what is soft landing? It is easy to crash land but safely land on a moon is an difficult art few can master. Agni 5 is MIRV capable but we have no evidence India has produced workable miniature MIRV. Again, its a difficult art few can succeed. And you haven even send a man to space yet with yr technology or own space craft.

Yes, I forgot India going to be a superpower in 15 years time ruling the white.

Wasn't that 2020? I remember watching some similar clip about 2020?

And their president had already told the world somewhere in 2006-7 that by 2012 or so india will be the Supapowa.

Now you should not disrespect Supapowa india.

Neutrino experiment may help explain origin of universe | Business Standard News
May 13, 2015 Last Updated at 20:04 IST

Scientists may be one step closer to solving some of the biggest mysteries of the universe as a neutrino experiment in southern China returned promising results.

A team from China's National Supercomputer Centre in Guangzhou using the world's fastest supercomputer, Tianhe-2, have completed a simulation involving three trillion neutrinos and dark matter particles, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

Zhang Tongjie of Beijing Normal University and lead researcher of the project has described a "video" simulating the elongated evolution of the universe, produced thanks to Tianhe-2, which worked like a "high-speed camera with extremely high definition".

The supercomputer "opened a new door" to the study of neutrinos, which could greatly expedite understanding of the origin and evolution of the universe, Zhang said.

Neutrinos are sometimes known as "ghost particles" because they interact very weakly with other forms of matter. They are among the most abundant -- and least understood -- fundamental particles. To figure out how they work, their mass must be established, but this has never been done accurately.

"At this moment, Tianhe-2 is the only supercomputer capable of conducting such an experiment," he said.

Tianhe-2, which literally means "Milky Way-2", took the top spot on a 2013 list of supercomputers. It is able to operate at 33.86 petaflops per second.

Tianhe-2 could hold the world's fastest supercomputer title till 2018, when the US is expected unveil two supercomputers three to five times faster than the Chinese system, at a cost of $325 million.
