WASHINGTON – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has hailed as "historic" a Japanese government decision to loosen restrictions on its military.

Hagel said once Japan's parliament passes implementing legislation, the Asian nation will be able to contribute more to regional security and expand its role on the world stage.

Japan's Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera met with Hagel Friday and discussed a recent Cabinet decision to reinterpret the nation's pacifist constitution to allow its military to help defend allies.

Hagel said the U.S. and Japan should have new guidelines for defense cooperation by year's end. He said the reforms will allow Japan to be more active in missile defense, counter-piracy and peacekeeping.

The move drew sharp criticism from rival China, and a cautious reaction from South Korea, a U.S. ally once colonized by Japan.

should not be happy, might be counter productive :jester::crazy_pilot:

Its too soon to call it counter-productive, let's see what the new guidelines are going to be.

I don't want Japan to be sending any our soldiers to any war region.

This is due to the US economic problems, they want Japan to alleviate some, at least in that area, if not to counter China through the Japanese proxy, since any direct confrontation with china is quite risky, be it on the economic field or the military one.

.
Diplomatic posturing, i say. I hope Japan is firm in maintaining our non-interventionist policy. I don't want any precious Japanese blood being spilled to satisfy foreign interests.

This is nonsense. Japan's military restriction is imposed by USA. The lossening of restriction is too, the decision of USA. But Japan is really playing a nice game by exploiting the rift between USA and China to become a "normal state". 正常な国家

The successor of Abe realizes this. We Japanese have to live with China as a neighbor, and thus, we must be wary of taking any roles that might raise tensions with Beijing. At the same time, we have to be sensitive of the feelings of South Korea.

As USA got weaken and the quality of USA elites nosedive, they actually shoot themselves in the feet. USA is now "de-colonizing" Japan.

When Japan become a "normal country", then she can say NO to USA. At that time, Japan may has hope of becoming a strong nation.

With so many Chinese around, I feel extremely surprised that a lone Japanese on this forum stayed this long. :omghaha::omghaha:

U.S.A should prepare for a surprise.

If you know what I mean.

In the past, there were another "Mongoloid civilizations" called "Maya, Aztec, Inca". Once these major civilization destroyed, the rest of native american race could not fight the colonization, and was wiped out. European settling, from native American point of view, IS invasion. Whats happening to Palestine now has been like this since ancient time. If loose the war, the fate are not different. The strongest rob the weaker. The robbed weaker, instead of revenge the stronger, go rob the weakest.

Without Japan, Korea and China as major country in N.E asia, we Thai alone cannot fight the colonial power. I cheer for Japan for one day she will be a truely independent country.

Seems there are not many Japanese in all foreign forums. May I say Japanese young men have lost interest in exploring outside world? If that's true. I assume Japan doesn't have a bright future.

I'm not the only Japanese here, there is also @Aegis DDG . I am active now, but when i start classes this fall, I'll be more a watcher/reader/poster. Despite the eclectic minds and posters here, I do enjoy interacting with those of high caliber here and there. There's a lot of intelligent folks here. It keeps me coming back. ;)

I wouldn't say that. We Japanese tend to read a lot, and I would not be surprised if more of my brothers are reading this forum than they are posting. In Japanese culture, its best to only talk or share a viewpoint if one believes it will contribute to the wider body of knowledge. The sharing and opine of invectives is not something we are brought up to do, as it is considered dishonorable for us. The old adage comes to mind, 話す前に計画, which literally means "Think before you talk"

Lots of people in Japan realize who the real enemy is. I don't believe the Japanese are stupid enough to think some uninhabited islands are worth losing even one year of trade with China.
