All options open against N Korea, says US military

All options open against N Korea, says US military
SEOUL, April 17, 2012, Reuters,

The United States is looking at “all options” as it seeks to discourage North Korea from conducting a third nuclear test, a senior US military officer said on Tuesday, days after a failed long-range rocket launch by the North that drew international condemnation.

The UN Security Council on Monday condemned North Korea for Friday’s rocket launch and warned of further action if Pyongyang carries out a nuclear test, reflecting concern that it may follow a pattern it set in 2009 during its second nuclear test.

Commander of US Pacific Command Admiral Samuel Locklear said Washington had a range of options to consider in response to any further provocation by the North.

“I don’t think it would be appropriate to comment on how we would pursue any future military operation, but I can tell you that with the alliance, that we are continually looking at all options,” he said when asked whether a surgical strike on the North’s nuclear test site was being considered.

Unlike 1993, there is a strong support for a surgical strike from ROK.

Although NK's leader is new and young he has veteran military assistants telling him what to do. NK's nuclear situation is very different from Iran's situation. If you ask me the north is playing their cards right and taking advantage of the worlds focus being taken off of them to try and disobey international treaties and get some quick testing in. In my humble opinion, the world should be less worried about a somewhat sane Iran and focus their efforts on eliminating a completely insane communist that chooses to starve his people to try and further develop capabilities that can REALLY cause destruction.

America should cut out this Macho Act. America does not have the gall to attack anyone. The war with two countires in the Middle East and Central Asia has bankrupted its coffers. The World knows it and the World is not stupid.

I agree wholeheartedly. Just because we have the capability doesn't mean we need to be throwing our weight around at every conflict. However, Korea is still technically at war, and a nuclear missile in the hands of North Korea would be much more disturbing than one in the hands of Iran. But think abouy it, if the United States doesn't do anything, no one will. The world has grown accustomed to sitting back and letting the US try and solve WORLD issues.

I think the world has given North Korea too much attention, This gives incentive to NK leaders to give a bit of show from time to time to boost its image internally. I'd just leave them alone, I don't think their leaders are that crazy to use weapons of mass destruction. On the other hand, any military action against it that threats their power could be dangeous as they have nothing to lose.

Would be? Dude, they already are armed with nuclear missiles. Where have you been in the past few years?

The N Korea problem IS mainly a problem between United States and N Korea.
The rest of the 4 parties just ......:pop::pop::whistle::whistle:

I'm talking about a missile with the capability to hit US soil, and seeing as how they can't even get a satellite into space I'd say theyve still got a long way to go before they can really threaten us.

But thats my point. Why does the rest of the world feel like they can just sit back and let the United States deal with it? You're right, it is a problem between the US and NK, but that's a problem in itself, don't you see?

Their primary target is never going to be US. It is going to be Tokyo and Seoul. Since both do not have nuclear weapons. Only US can defend them but would US take the risk and go to a nuclear in South of China. What happens to US economy then? US economy can not function one day without the economies of China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. They have got you by the balls and you do not know it. Did you know that as per US intel, North Koreans have tens of thousands of artillery pieces with millions of shells within range of Seoul. The scary thing is every fourth shell tip is Chemical since North Korea has the world's largest active chemical weapons in field. They do not need to invade US. They just need to defeat you right there. They have chemical weapons, nukes and conventional missiles and the world's most extensive underground warfare tunnels which are even more hardened and extensive than Vietnam. It is more than enough, I would say, dont you agree?

The US has been so powerful for so long, she always looks at things through her own perspectives. Because the world has been changing so fast, she should for once try to put herself into others' shoes and the views might be different from the other side.

No you mis-understand me. The main problem IS between United States and N Korea.
United States still list N Korea as one of the three AXIS of evil. This means regime change. US initiate it.
Not China, not Russia, not Japan and not S Korea.

And to counter the regime change, N Korea built the bomb.

N Korea wants direct talks only with US. It is US that wants to include all 6 parties.
Each time the 6 parties get close to an agreement. US neo cons sabotage it.
US do not want any agreement. Only regime change even if it means war because US would not be affect.... Until N Korea perfect the rocket.

A lot of these world issues are created by the United States. If US government believes that it needs to overthrow all non-friendly regimes, yes, the world has a lot of issues. What business do we have in Iraq, Libya and Syria? And cannot the government cut a deal with Taliban and leave? Do I want a nuclear armed North Korea? No. Will I lose sleep over it? I won't either. I do lose sleep seeing my tax money are spent bombing other countries. NK leaders are not religiously fundamentalists who don't fear death. They are not going to use it unless they are provoked. This is no longer 1950 and they don't have Soviet support. Leave them alone and don't make "defending against American aggression" as the main reason they are behind their paranoid leader. And hope eventually they open up just as China did.
