Update: Iran Presidential Election 2017 - Rouhani is re-elected for second term

.
More than 40 million people participated in election !

Rouhani wins !

.
Let's hope....historically (At least in the U.S.) a 2nd term president is a bit more ballsy with their agenda. I hope he does go after these so-called "unelected centers of power". Also, I hope they reform these foundations, they are nothing more than piggy banks for the corrupt few.

.
Rouhani has won.

Congratulations to Iran and Iranians. The people have won. All those that were spreading lies against Rouhani, smearing rouhani supporters, using populism including making laughable alliances with tataloo just for votes, busing people to rallies and handing out food copons for votes, have lost. This election has showed again that clear majority of Iranian people want change and reforms.

Should I cry or laugh over such a ridiculous statement?
Whatever makes you happy.

Rouhani has won.

Congratulations to Iran and Iranians. The people have won. Would you have congratulated the people if Raisee had won, and respected their decisions?

Final tally not done yet, but so far, congrats to Rouhani's supporters.

& good bye to space program !
It's officially dead ...

I said this to you in 1392 , but you tried to be optimistic .... probably , we should say good by to AbuMussa , Tonb Bozrg and Koochack , Security and our missile program as well .... be ready ...

Well now I'm wondering who is 4% and who is 96%.
well , some of my relative was saying " even if Raeisi win , those rich people will do what they did to our economy in 1390-1391 , so we will vote for Rouhani " .... they was scared .... most people are not as bold as someone like me and they prefer to have a normal life ....

.
After this election, Rouhani has strongest chance of being next supreme leader.

Also, I did not vote for anyone, rouhani also has done some wrong and changed positions but I prefer him a million times over raisi who has zero executive experience and is a much bigger power hungry hypocrite.

.
The people have spoken. Congrats to Rouhani's supporters.

This should be a wakeup call for Principalists. They need to be serious about giving the people a strong alternative to the reformists candidates. In '92, they thought they could do it without Ahmadenijad's support but they blamed the loss on the fact that the candidates were not united, and votes got split. In '96, they didn't do the same mistake, and had only one candidate at the end, and they still lost, because they still think they don't need Ahmadenijad. They thought stealing Ahmadenijad's slogans and tactics was enough.

Raisee was a bad choice. I think Raisee motivated people to come and vote for Rouhani. People who might not have been happy with Rouhani and might have stayed home, came out to keep Raisee out of the office. Ghalibaf alone could have had better numbers, but I don't think he could have won either. Fear is a strong factor in convincing voters to keep your opposition out of the office, and Reformists are very good at scaring people, and both Ghalibaf and Raisee (Raisee even more) allow such fear tactics to work against them. When the reformists opponent is a Military Man & a Judge, they become good targets. Neither a military man nor a judge can pretend to be the man of the people, that's why they failed at populists strategies. Raisee was such a terrible choice that I heard from a Rouhani supporter that the regime put Raisee forward to convince people to vote for Rouhani.

Anyway, Rouhani won fair and square.

.
congrats to MR Rouhani.
I wish to see better economy in next four years.

.
Congratulations ...

& good bye to space program !

It's officially dead ...
Time will tell,I guess. If in a year to 18 months there have been no further launches or launch attempts then you`re probably right. It`ll also be interesting to see if any further work will be done on the arak reactor as we`ve heard nothing more about that or its new redesigned core.Time will tell whether these programs have been quietly halted or are still ongoing just perhaps with a much lower priority.
At any rate congratulations to iran on its successful elections and a decent voter turn out as well and congratulations to president rouhani on winning his second term.At a time when the entire region is being increasingly engulfed in chaos iran stands as an example of strength and stability in the region.

Congrats to Iran :)

Iran’s Rouhani: A moderate cleric open to the world

Rouhani has presented himself as the candidate of change and social freedoms, attacking his opponents as "extremists" whose "era is over".

President Hassan Rouhani, who won re-election on Saturday, has spent three decades at the heart of Iran’s revolutionary establishment but still faces opposition from hardliners for trying to rebuild ties with the West. The 68-year-old cleric, almost always clad in his white turban, repeated his convincing 2013 victory by bringing together moderates and reformists with his pledges to end Iran’s isolation and improve civil rights at home.

Born in Semnan province on November 12, 1948, Rouhani is married with four children and holds a doctorate in law from Scotland’s Glasgow Caledonian University. With his snow-white beard, he comes across as jovial and scholarly, if not overly charismatic, when speaking in public. He has presented himself as the candidate of change and social freedoms, attacking his opponents as “extremists” whose “era is over”.

His first term saw a groundbreaking 2015 deal with world powers that ended many sanctions and a 13-year standoff over Iran’s nuclear programme. He also brought a more technocratic approach to the economy and tamed runaway inflation. But critics said he massively oversold the economic benefits of the nuclear agreement, and there were fears that continuing stagnation and high unemployment would hurt his re-election bid.

That proved unfounded as Rouhani sailed to victory against hardline challenger Ebrahim Raisi, winning 57 per cent of the vote, on the back of a huge turnout. His supporters hope another resounding victory will give him more leverage to ease social restrictions and release activists and opposition leaders jailed after mass protests in 2009.

Rouhani’s extensive backroom experience, cultivated as a protege to the late revolutionary power-broker Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, puts him in a strong position to negotiate with more conservative forces in the judiciary and security forces. As Iran’s nuclear negotiator in 2003-05, Rouhani earned the nickname “the diplomatic sheikh” from his European interlocutors, but that was also the start of criticism from hardliners at home who accused him of kowtowing to the West.

Before then, Rouhani had been firmly in the revolutionary establishment. He held key defence portfolios during the 1980 -88 Iran-Iraq war before spending 16 years as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Iran’s top security post.

When student protesters took to the streets in 1999, Rouhani called them “bandits and saboteurs” and most damningly “the corrupt of the Earth” — a charge that carries the death penalty in Iran. He remains a member of the conservative Association of Combatant Clergy, although his position on protesters seems to have softened over the years.

Rouhani consistently sought to rebuild relations with the United States, and became the first Iranian leader to speak with his counterpart in Washington when Barack Obama phoned in September 2013. He has never been under any illusion about the difficulties of the relationship, telling US journalists in 2002: “America is not keen on independent countries… America is keen on countries that completely surrender themselves and act according to America’s demands.”
