What's new

Up to 40,000 Native American children may have died at government-run boarding schools across the US, expert says as remains of 10 kids are exhumed fr

you miss the forest for the trees yet again. I am not saying the 1619 Project is an accurate representation of US history. I am highlighting the fact that people care enough to debate the subject at a national level. While other nations brush such concerns under the carpet and pretend it never happened.

Slavery was long practised and thrived in Europe, Asia and the middle east, especially prevalent in the islamic world including the Ottoman empire that abolished slavery in 1924. It isn't an American phenomenon, slaves have suffered far worse and for much longer in Europe, middle east and Asia. Do you see a similar debates in these societies? Modern day slavery thrives in the muslim world, UAE, Kuwait and Saudi and yet no one is discussing it.

I didn't read rest of your discussion with him. Just wanted say I absolutely agree with the highlighted part. You have spoken the truth.

This is what a true genocide is like

Lands Originally Held by American Indians — Until…

Genocide by Anglo whites. It is the same in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

They always talk about "soul-searching" because it costs them nothing. They've already killed off most of the natives and will never talk about returning those lands to the remaining descendants of the rightful inhabitants. The most they will do is put them on reservations and try to annihilate them over time in "schools."

It is funny how the whites helped Israel "regain" land in Middle East but will never contenance giving land back to the Mohawks, Mohicans, Soiux, Apaches and many other native peoples they killed and stole land from.

I visited Native American museum in Pheniox. It wasn’t a museum but more like a culture center. Anyway, sad to see pictures and history, how children were ripped apart and taken away forcefully to boarding schools. Where they were given new names, culture, beating forced into labour, while in boarding school.

Apparently all the "unimportant" Native American lives lost (and BTW 95% of the African slave trade) to the non-Anglos in central and South American don't count...

Selective boogeyman i guess...

Or all the slaves sold from the Eastern coasts of Africa to lands across the Indian Ocean. Selective? More like intentionally malicious.

That was fine and dandy when whites were completely dominant in population and power but as they lose control l, like what is transpiring now, things will get ugly. Look at South Africa.

Why will anyone resent me for the things my forefathers did before I came into being?
We have black sheriffs, mayors and governors and we even had a black president did white people suffer under black rule? America isn't like Han China - homogeneity isn't an existential requirement for us.

Because I see you have things I want for myself, but without working over generations to get them?

That isn't a uniquely American problem, wealth disparity is everywhere and far worse in Russia and China.

True, but we need to be selective on where we direct our feigned outrage. :D

(As an example, how many know what happened in orphanages across USSR before and when it collapsed?)

Is this a serious question? Our society is veering towards illogical extremes. Look at the rise of terms like ACAB on the left and the lunacy of the Trump cult on the right.

This is actually no longer true. The Gini coefficient in China and the US is actually roughly the same now but the difference is that it is actually stabilizing or heading downwards in China while rising in the US. China’s govt invests heavily in public infrastructure and poverty alleviation while the US is ruled by a corrupt oligarchic elite that refuses to invest in its own population even though a generation ago the US was literally ahead of China by light years. Add to that the increasing diversity and multiculturalism and you can bet the gap between the haves and have nots in American society will keep increasing. I think Brazil is a good barometer of where we are headed but the American version will likely still have far more wealth concentrated in the rich and upper middle class but also have far more political toxicity and racial animosity.

Same stories, same treatment, same results. Deaths of Indigenous people.

By same people

Mostly, but not limited to Anglo Saxons.
By Europeans of all origins.

Oh I forgot to .... :D

Hang on a minute: What is clear that blaming only one particular group as a target can work only if one maliciously ignores evidence for other groups. One group is wrong? Sure. But then where is the similar outrage over all the others who have done the same? There is no excuse here.
