In January 2025 the average price of a dozen Grade A eggs in the United States was $4.95 a record high. This is a 53% rise over January of the previous year and a notable improvement over $4.15 in December 2024. Rising price of eggs is causing supermarket inflation overall which is having an effect on people's wallets across the country.
The ongoing avian influenza outbreak which has resulted in the slaughter of millions of egg-laying hens to stop the virus's spread is the main cause of this price increase. American egg supply has been severely impacted by this leading to shortages and increase of price . Some companies including Costco and Trader Joe have implemented purchase limits in an effort to manage the rising prices and shortages. Waffle House has even temporarily increased price of each egg on its menu by $0.50.
Political controversy has also been triggered by the situation with some Republicans accusing former President Joe Biden of causing inflation that has led to high egg costs. But the present administration which has only been in office for three weeks, blames the increased costs on other market forces and the lingering consequences of the avian flu outbreak. Depending on the recovery of the egg supply and steps taken to control inflation experts estimate that high egg prices may continue till 2026.
