Union Cabinet clears National Food Security Bill

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Sunday evening approved the National Food Security Bill that will provide rice at Rs 3, wheat at Rs 2 and coarse grains at Re 1 per kg to over half of India's 1.2 billion population.

The meeting was held at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's 7, Race Course Road residence. The cabinet on December 13 had deferred a decision on the Food Bill as the government thought it proper to bring the allies on board.

Sources said agriculture minister Sharad Pawar has expressed concern that the food subsidy, currently at Rs.63,000 crore ($12 billion), may go up to Rs.1.2 lakh crore ($23 billion) to implement the right to food law.

The food bill is the pet project of the Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council and was part of the Congress manifesto for the 2009.

My first thanks to UPA govt if implemented.... BTW nice decision :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

When was the last time taxes gone up after subsidy?????? friend don't talk like a ill informed one.

We can't be Hippocrates as we talk about hunger, malnutrition and poverty but do nothing. It will help the needy one.

And as for the taxes its a good news the taxes will be lower and more rational after the introduction of DTC from next financial year. :smokin:

taxes do go up mostly indirect taxes like the ones on petrol etc...all i am saying is GOI should try to collect more taxes from those who evade it rather than increasing indirect taxes.

Good move!

But this should be implemented without corruption! which is cough! cough! highly unlikely..i think NAREGA/MNREGA and likes are the biggest pit for corruption in which thousands of corer's allotted from center and don't know how much amount is reach at the end!

And to curb on corruption we need stronger jan lokpal bill not the jokepal which gov is offering.

btw...Good move..

NREGA has already been audited as failure
Govt to meet on NREGA after CAG calls programme a failure - Economic Times

The way RTI was implemented everybody knows(Anna movement for RTI in maharashtra) even UPA should not be credited if they come up with Jan Lokpal too....

Thats why I asserted as "if implemented"!!!!

I am bit choosy and expecting much more from UPA,,,, though you can join the party :)
