VCs seek Imran’s help against amendment

The vice chancellors of 19 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa universities have written a letter to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, seeking his intervention against a move by the PTI government to amend the KP Universities Act 2012.

The move will undermine the autonomy of universities, allowing the provincial government to change the heads of higher education institutions. The letter, written by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Vice Chancellors Committee, reminds the PTI chief of his election promise to promote higher education through reforms.

“Sir, it is sad to note that your party members unduly influenced the changes that the working groups had proposed. The proposed changes in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities Act 2012 are person-specific and not holistic in nature.

Reforms that are now being sought neither conform to the ones that had been agreed upon nor do they address the problems faced by the public sector universities in the province,” says the letter. The VC Committee noted that soon after the inception of PTI government, working groups were constituted for implementing reforms in higher education and some vice chancellors of public sector universities were also made part of the consultative process. “The vice chancellors and the teachers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa public sector universities view with deep concern the proposed changes to the 2012 Act, as it will erode the very autonomy of these universities,” it reads.

The VCs are of the view that reforms are required but all stakeholders must be taken into confidence. “Only then would the reforms have any chance of improving the way universities are run.”Earlier, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Vice Chancellors’ Committee convener Dr Rasool Jan told The News that the proposed amendments will ruin the higher education if passed by the provincial assembly.

He said the future of higher education must be protected through urgent intervention. The vice chancellors have also sought a meeting with the governor and chief minister of KP to apprise them of their concerns about the changes in the Act.

instead of giving more autonomy to the Universities, they are trying to bring governmental control over head of the Universities. this is absolutely not acceptable.

not much of a difference between imran khan and nawaz....:haha:

a bit premature to say this. It will be his response to this matter that will confirm if there is any difference or not. Also it is good that at least the universities were able to approach the higher ups like this and i hope this matter will be resolved to the best interest of all parties, such that this enables better higher education structure and opportunities.

@Leader

Have you told IK about this ? or does he know anyway ?

he will be informed and he will definitely wont let it happen.. but the point is why reach to Imran Khan for the right things..

Aatif Khan is a competent and sensible person himself. he should not initiate such moves which hurdle the autonomy of the universities..

anyhow, a wrong shall not be allowed to take place. we are not like jahil nooras or pipliyas !

Totally agree.

I think IK should have a word with ministers privately and tell them that this letter from VCs is a reflection of their (govt.'s) incompetence.

It is also possible that this move was initiated by the bureaucracy and the ministers were not well informed (civil bureaucrates can potentially make an attempt to undermine the govt.).

.
so what exactly is the reform which we are discussing here? If the reform is being proposed by the working group (rather than some power block) then it is worthwhile to get their view before jumping to conclusions.

What actually is the issue? Why govt is trying to bring VC's of universities under govt control in first place?
