ISLAMABAD: In a landmark development which can open great economic prospects for Pakistan and its people, the United Nations has agreed to constitute a sub commission to finalise the technical details confirming Pakistans claim on 50,000 square kilometres of Exclusive Extended Economic Zone in the Arabian Sea.
The very constitution of the sub-commission by the UN Commission on Law of Seas (UNCLOS) in our case means that Pakistan has almost made the case, an official source said, adding that this really was great news, conveyed by the UNCLOS to Pakistan on Thursday. The UNCLOS deliberated the matter on 27th and 28th August and reached this conclusion.
While countries like Russia, China, Japan, etc, are still fighting their cases to get the sub commission constituted to extend their claim on high seas, Pakistan has almost made its case for an extension of its territorial jurisdiction from the existing 200 nautical miles to 350 miles the addition of 50,000 square kilometers.
This Exclusive Extended Economic Zone in the Arabian sea, the sources said, would offer a real treasure-trove of prospects for Pakistan. This EEEZ of 50,000 square kilometers would be the exclusive domain of Pakistan to discover minerals, oil, gas etc through offshore drilling and do fishing besides using these territorial limits to further secure the countrys defence.
A high-level delegation of the Government of Pakistan, led the government of Pakistan led by the then secretary science and technology Akhlaq Ahmad Tarrar and comprising country permanent representative at UN Masood Khan, senior officials of Defence Ministry, Pakistan Navy and others, presented its claim before the UNCLOS on 16th August.
The UN Commission on Law of Seas was greatly impressed from the presentation of the Pakistani delegation. It later deliberated the case of Pakistan in its in-house meeting on 27-28th August and endorsed Pakistans case by setting up the Sub-Commission to confirm the technical details of the Pakistani claim.
Pakistans case was prepared by the National Institute of Oceanography, whose professional work was rewarded and brought this news for the country and its people. The work on this claim was initiated in 2003 and during the later years Rs 500 million was approved by ECNEC for this project of great national importance.
The National Institute of Oceanography completed the scientific research and after legal formalities the secretary science and technology Akhlaq Tarrar pleaded the case in the UN without the help of any lawyer.
The sources said that except Oman none of the countries objected to the Pakistans claim. Even in the case of Oman, it is said, the issue was settled amicably after the Pakistani team offered to Oman before the UNCLOS that Omans rights is established, Pakistan would not resist.
Extremely excited, the Ministry of Science and Technology is eager to inform Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif about this development.
