UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 18 (APP): UN Envoy Ellen Margrethe has praised the role of Pakistani peacekeepers in Liberia in the maintenance of peace and security in the African country and for providing humanitarian services to the communities they served.

“You have empowered the people of Lofa, Bomi and Grand Cape Mount counties, enabling them to peacefully engage in their social and economic activities,” Ms. Ellen, the Special Representative of the Secretary‑General (SRSG), said in Tubmanburg, Liberia, during a ceremony held to honour Pakistani peacekeepers.

Ms. Ellen gave the assurance that the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) would continue to support Liberia’s national security agencies to maintain law and order, clamp down on crime and weed out any activities that threatened to undermine peace in Liberia.

She noted that during the holiday season, crime rates had a tendency to increase. “We will not tolerate any criminal activity and will do whatever is necessary to deal with criminal elements,” she stressed.

Commending the Pakistani contingent for taking up the challenge of rehabilitating many of the roads in Liberia, she pointed out that Liberia’s road network had been identified as a major priority “that must be rebuilt to enable freedom of movement for the purposes of trade and industry and therefore enhance Liberia’s economic development”.

Pakistani peacekeepers have also made an impact on health care and general social welfare in Liberia and the SRSG remarked that its medical outreach projects had reached more than 48,000 Liberians, so far.

She also thanked the contingent for adopting schools and providing skills training classes that have empowered more than three hundred ex‑combatants and unemployed youth. “Training as paramedics, and in masonry, carpentry, welding, auto mechanics and computer studies, will certainly build the confidence of these young people and equip them for service to their country,” she added.

In his address, Pakistani Contingent Commander Brig. Ghulam Murtaza said Pakistan was proud to be one of the most consistent contributors to United Nations peacekeeping operations and reiterated his contingent’s commitment to continue to work with the same zeal in its new area of operations in Maryland County.

The medal award ceremony was also attended by the Deputy SRSG, Ms. Henrietta Mensa‑Bonsu, UNMIL Force Commander, Lt. Gen. ATM

Zahirul Alam, UNMIL Military Chief of Staff, Brig.‑Gen. Emmanuel Quist, Director of Mission Support, Stephen Lieberman, Bomi County Superintendent, Mohammed Massaley and members of the diplomatic corps, among others.
