Ukroboronprom ready to modernize 300 T-72 tanks to meet NATO standards

18.03.2015

Ukroboronprom State Concern is ready to upgrade 300 T-72 tanks which are currently in the army reserve to meet NATO standards, Deputy State Concern Yuriy Paschenko has said.

"The T-72 is not in the service of Ukrainian Army. There are almost 300 of these tanks in Ukraine and we suggested to the Defense Ministry to upgrade them up to the PT-91 – the Polish main battle tank - to meet NATO standards," the press service of the concern said, citing Paschenko.

He also said that Poland had given the Ukrainian military a chance to test the PT-91.

In accordance with international standards, modernizing military equipment will help strengthen the Ukrainian Army, which needs fast and efficient rearming.

The concern said that its leading enterprises have received access to the NATO Master Catalogue of References for Logistics.

In late March Ukroboronprom will hold a joint standardization seminar in Kyiv with representatives of NATO members.

. . . .
I heard these are PT-91 tanks from Poland?

How many tanks did Ukraine lose in war so far? Close to 1,000? Man no wonder NATO never dared to fight USSR.

The T-64 was finally used in large scale combat in mid 2014 during the War in Donbass, with the Ukrainian Army deploying T-64 tanks as the main battle tank in the offensive against pro-Russian separatists. Also, towards the end of August 2014, over 20 T-64 tanks were documented as being operated by Military forces of Novorossiya. Initially, while the tank count was low, Ukrainian and NATO officials claimed that these T-64s were supplied to the separatists by Russia. By the end of August 2014, over 70 T-64 tanks of various configurations, including at least three T-64 BM BULATs, were documented as destroyed in the war in Donbass.

Ukraine begun 2014 with 135 BMs' and 600 BVs', but since the beginning of the Donbass War, over a hundred T-64BV and a dozen T-64BM were destroyed or captured.
  • T-64B or Ob'yekt 447A (1976) – Fitted with redesigned armour, 1A33 fire control system, 9K112-1 "Kobra" ATGM system (NATO code "AT-8 Songster"), TPN-1-49-23 sight, 2A46-2 gun, 2E26M stabiliser and 6ETs40 loader. Later B/BV models have more modern systems 1A33-1, TPN-3-49, 2E42 and a 2A46M-1 gun. From 1985 the T-64B was fitted with stronger glacis armour; older tanks were upgraded with a 16-mm armour plate. Tanks, equipped with the 1,000 hp 6DT engine are known as T-64BM.
  • T-64BV – Features "Kontakt-1" reactive armour and "Tucha" 81-mm smoke grenade launchers on the left of the turret.
  • T-64BM2 or Ob'yekt 447AM-2 – "Kontakt-5" reactive armour, rubber protection skirts, 1A43U fire control, 6ETs43 loader and able to fire the 9K119 missile (NATO code "AT-11A Sniper"), 5TDFM 850 hp (625 kW) engine.
  • T-64U, BM Bulat, or Ob'yekt 447AM-1 – Ukrainian modernisation, bringing the T-64B to the standard of the T-84. Fitted with "Nozh" reactive armour, 9K120 "Refleks" missile (NATO code "AT-11 Sniper"), 1A45 "Irtysh" fire control, TKN-4S commander's sight, PZU-7 antiaircraft machine-gun sight, TPN-4E "Buran-E" night vision, 6TDF 1,000-hp (735 kW) engine

I fail to see how the loss of these T-64 variants reflects on the quality of NATO tanks or of that of the doctrine pertaining to their use.

UKROBORONPROM IS READY TO MODERNIZE 300 TANKS TO MEET NATO STANDARDS

UKROBORONPROM is ready to upgrade about 300 tanks T-72, which are now in army reserve, to meet NATO standards. According to UKROBORONPROM Deputy Director General of Operations Yurii Pashchenko, modernized units can solve some crucial problems of Ukrainian army.

During round table "Problems of Ukraine’s military-industrial complex reforming," Yurii Pashchenko mentioned that modernized, in accordance with international standards, military equipment will help to further strengthen Ukrainian army, which needs fast and efficient rearming today.

"Tank T-72 is not in service of Ukrainian Army: There are almost 300 of these tanks in Ukraine and we suggested to Ministry of Defence to upgrade them up to tanks PT-91 - Polish main battle tanks - to meet NATO standards ", - stressed Yurii Pashchenko. T-72B3 is main battle tank of Russian military , Isnt it ?

Ukrainian military sources and various international military experts have all pointed to the fact that the separatists are using T72 tanks that are of Russian military origin. The Russians, as usual, vehemently deny this arguing that these tanks must come from Ukrainian military stores. However the main battle tank of the Ukrainian military is the T64. The primary reason Ukraine adopted the T64 over the T72 upon independence from Russia was that Ukraine inherited the T64 production factory in Kharkiv.

So even here poor volunteers are driving T-72B3 tanks but not the regular Russian soldiers ?

How much one T-72B3 tank costs ?

The cost of modernization is around 1.5mln$ per one tank.

Russian regular soldiers have precious lives. They do not fight without air and sea cover. Plus, there are plenty of rebels, don't need Russian regular soldiers.

There are thousands of T-72B3 tanks.

Those reports are wrong and not proven. There are no Russian regular soldiers there. The Russian military works as a whole air, sea, ground. Russian ground soldiers never fight without Russian air and sea forces.

For a country, tanks are free. For Russia, a T-72B3 costs nothing it is built by government order just like Ukraine does not spend money building thousands of tanks.

Ukrainian military do have air defenses thats why its understandable that air war hasnt took place but Russian regular soldiers have took part in ground war in Eastern Ukraine.

The purpose of air power is to support ground forces. Even if there is danger of being shot down, the air power will be there. During Gulf war and Kosovo war, the US air power lost aircraft to air defenses yet it was there to support the US ground force.

If the Russian ground force goes into battle, rest assured, the Russian air power will be there to support.

Maybe donations by individuals but not by the Russian government.
