Ukraine on Brink of Missile Deal with India

Ukraine is close to signing one of its biggest ever defense deals for air-to-air missiles with India, according to Russian media reports.

Nezavisimaya Gazeta says the deal for R-27 missiles, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, is in the final stages and is waiting for approval from the Ukrainian leadership.

The Vympel R-27 (AA-10 Alamo) missile is a medium-to-long-range air-to-air missile developed by the Soviet Union. It is similar to U.S. AIM-7 Sparrow.

The missile comes in infrared-homing (R-27T), semi-active-radar-homing (R-27R), and active-radar-homing (R-27AE) versions. It would be fitted to India’s MiG-29, Su-27 and Su-30 fighter jets.

While the deal has not been confirmed officially, the paper quotes a source close to Ukraine’s national security and defense council, saying both nations are sensitive to Russian concerns over the deal and want to make sure that it would not irritate Moscow.

Tensions between Kiev and Moscow could arise later because if the deal is successful, India may want to buy other weaponry from Ukraine, entering a market dominated by Russia, defense analysts quoted by the paper said.
Some industry experts believe Moscow would not oppose the deal as the Ukrainian company is the only manufacturer of these missiles, although Russian firms supply some components for R-27.

The R-27 was originally designed by Vympel, a Russian missile design bureau, in the 1980s. Vympel is now part of Russia's Tactical Missiles Corporation, which now produces successor weapons to R-27.

Artem, a Ukrainian arms firm involved in R-27 production in Ukraine, could not be reached for comment.
Ukrainian R-27s displayed by the Artem and Arsenal companies at the Moscow air show in 2011 featured what the makers claimed were upgraded seekers. Arsenal said it had developed a new infra-red seeker for the R-27 extending its detection range from 18 km to 30 km.

New Delhi showed interest at the recent DEFEXPO-2012 arms show in Ukrainian anti-tank missiles and new engines for Mi-family helicopters produced by the Ukrainian Motor Sich company, according to Ukrainian officials.

R-27 Variants...

Is there any real need for this..? Or, it is a way of getting some TOT..?

Sorry did not see that..

This is what Wiki says about its variants..

Variants

R-27R AA-10 Alamo-A, semi-active radar homing. Launch range from Mach 1.4, 11 km altitude: 60 km (head-on) / 21 km (tail-on). Minimum launch range under same conditions 2 km (head-on) / 0.5 to 0.6 km (tail-on).[1] Up to 80 km under optimal conditions

R-27T AA-10 Alamo-B, infrared homing, passive homing using the Avtomatika 9B-1032 (PRGS-27) IR seeker head. Weight 248 kg. Range is said to be 70 km under optimal conditions. The R-27T missile does not possess a data-link, which makes it useful only at much shorter ranges at head-on engagements, however. At tail-on engagements the longer physical reach can be fully utilized.

R-27ER AA-10 Alamo-C, the semi-active-radar homing extended-range version, which is 70 cm longer and slightly wider. Range up to 130 km under optimal conditions. Entered service 1990.

R-27ET AA-10 Alamo-D, the infrared-homing extended-range version, which is 70 cm longer and slightly wider, range of 120 km under optimal conditions using the Avtomatika 9B-1032 (PRGS-27) seeker head. Weight 348 kg. Entered service in 1990. The R-27ET missile does not possess a data-link, which makes it useful only at much shorter ranges at head-on engagements, however. At tail-on engagements the longer physical reach can be fully utilized.

R-27AE AA-10 Alamo-E, active-radar-homing long-range version. Range 1.0 km to 130 km. Weight 349 kg.

R-27EM, naval version. Semi-active-radar homing with an upgraded seeker head, enabling it to engage targets flying at three meters above the sea. Maximum range is 170 km against a head-on target.

R-27P, a passive anti-radiation missile, similar to the US/NATO "Shrike" missile.

That question is bugging me too...Something Under the table is going on..

Diversification of supply, ToT and making new relations. Prime goal will be something different though. We need something from Ukraine that we can't get right now. So making better relations. Guess what ??? I don't know too

Vympel (Russia) designed the missile and already have a better Russian version. Ukranian are using Soviet Era technology whatever left to them. Deal does not look sweet to me considering the future prospect.

India wants to become a big purchaser of Ukrainian Arms so that it denies Pakistan the ability to purchase arms from Ukraine.

Pakistan bought over 300 Tanks from Ukraine 1995 and all of India went crazy.

So this could be a pathetic attempt to prevent that from happening in the future.

Aren't you stretching your imagination too far? I mean the tank deal was 17 years ago...

Yea but for our Al-Khalid Tanks, their engines are made in Ukraine. Also, Ukraine gives Pakistan valuable spare parts for its Armored and Tank forces.

This could stop should it become more economically viable for Ukraine to sell arms to India over the expense of Pakistan.

No he got a point. Pak armour has huge Ukranion tanks. Though it's not called pathetic attempt. (Pathetic attempt is something to tell china not to allow Indian rice when your yourself import it :)) it's strategic move. Ukraine hold some good USSR tech and stuff that even Russia don't have

Not really. It could simply be the fact that we're getting a good deal on the missiles.

If not that, then Sonia Gandhi just got some more millions in her Swiss bank accounts...:coffee:

You got it right. It's called strategy. And looking at Ukrains ability in USSR techs India will be more interested in Know how. Than any weapon system

If the missiles are cheaper which I doubt.
And Mr. Gandhi will not do something like that. 2014 is near dude.
