UK Defense Secretary Philip Hammond says Britain could send military reinforcements to the Persian Gulf in the wake of a military confrontation with Iran.

Speaking at a press conference in London on Tuesday, he said two British and French warships and the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln had entered the Persian Gulf on Sunday.

Hammond added that the decision to send British HMS Argyll sent a "clear signal" to Tehran, The Telegraph reported.

When asked if more resources could be sent, Hammond said, "The UK has a contingent capability to reinforce that presence should at any time it be considered necessary to do so."

UK defense ministry declined to offer further details on what assets and personnel are currently in the Persian Gulf.

Anti-Iran measures and war rhetoric provoked by the United States and its Western allies are aimed to deny Iran's right of having peaceful nuclear program.

Iran, as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has the legal right to develop nuclear capability for civilian purposes.

The big guns mate? UK? I somehow dont think so. With all the latest cuts with the forces in the UK, they would be only providing a supporting role and perhaps provide tea and coffee to the main aircraft carriers the US have out their. They feel a bit restless nowadays with Argentina making noises over the falklands too.

We will stand by the United States no matter what.

Time to crusade on some Muslims.

You got that right, boy. We will show the Muslims who is boss.

If I was running the show I would rather have UK and France make a big presence in the Mediterranean instead to backup Israel if attacked....

TO be honest UK would get in the way here in the Persian Gulf

Wouldn't it be better for Australia to align itself to China more than the US, UK etc? China will end up bigger trading partners and is nearer to Australia.

.
well i can understand the point of that.. sure economically its viable...however.. even to the chinese, we are still western... not asian

it is better for us to remain allies to the US and UK etc because of our historic ties and ancestry etc we have very similar cultures and all... it makes no sense to align oneself to another country who has a totally different culture / moral principles, then to those who are similar to us... im sure you would agree.

but yeh from a economical and geographical perspective it would make more sense to be more aligned with china.
