The British police have decided to make use of a laser gun which fires a blinding wall of light making their track record in employing brutal techniques even worse.

Severely criticised for their militarized use of Taser guns, tear gas, pepper spray, batons, and rubber bullets in order to tackle public disorder, the Metropolitan Police have now decided to resort to laser weapons to tackle unrest in the future, with the Home Office saying previously employed tools and tactics have left a “capability gap” due to their short range.

The proposed laser gun is a shoulder mounted device known as SMU 100 which would temporarily blind anyone who is caught in its beam of light.

The device costs around £25,000 and fires a three-square-meter wall of light which can be projected to 500 meters away.

Moreover, the British police plan to make use of long-range pepper-spray projectiles and wireless electronic stun guns which have a greater range than previously employed Taser guns.

After unprecedented unrest swept across Britain in August, the Metropolitan Police expanded their use of brutal tactics. In November, the British police authorized the firing of rubber bullets at student protesters for the first time on the British mainland.

Furthermore, Scotland Yard unveiled plans for buying water cannons to be deployed on the British mainland and to increase the number of police officers trained to fire rubber bullets.

All these measures taken by the British police come as several officials, including Former London Metropolitan Police chief John Arthur Stevenson, have warned of the recurrence of the August unrest saying Britain would face years of public unrest.
