UK newspaper 'The Independent' to use 'Bombay' instead of Mumbai as stand against 'Hindu nationalism

.
All the old names were much before the British arrived in Indian subcontinent. In all regional dialects:

1- Cawnpore was Kanhepur
2- Bombay was Mumbadevi shortened to Mumbai
3- Benaras was Varanasi etc

Ask anyone of the old generation (those 80 plus) and when they talk in regional languages, they'll always say the real name out which the colonials couldn't pronounce.

A silly ignorant reporter who has no knowledge of the country he is talking about.

What a pity.

That's false. There was no city or town called 'Mumbai'. The Portuguese created it by claiming it from the sea. The original Portuguese name was 'Bom baia' meaning 'Good Bay'. This was anglicized to 'Bombay' when the British invaded and occupied the area.

I like 'Bombay' more than 'Mumbai'.

.
Mumbai was already a trading port city from ancient times with the west.
as do Gujarat and Kerala
