Nov 7/13: UAE.

The UAE is looking to replace its fleet of 68 modernized Mirage 2000-9 fighters with even more modern planes: Dassault’s Rafale and BAE/EADS’ Eurofighter are reportedly their lead options. The question is what to do with their old aircraft. Dassault doesn’t seem interested in buying them back, but Egypt already flies Mirage 2000s, and the Gulf states (with the exception of Qatar) have stepped in as key Egyptian aid providers in the wake of America’s withdrawal. Buying the UAE’s Mirages would push the Egyptian fleet to 86, making it a viable high-end alternative to their F-16s.

The UAE is pushing, and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi General Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is said to have told Dassault Aviation about his talks with Egypt. Will Egypt bite?

Egypt’s biggest problem is that it will have a very hard time affording these used fighters, let alone buying enough French weapons to equip them. Their next problem will be fending off American interference, but the UAE isn’t a country the USA can afford to offend. That hasn’t necessarily stopped the Americans recently, but the UAE’s position at the Straits of Hormuz, and quiet but extensive basing for USAF aircraft, are levers that can’t really be ignored. Mirage 2000-9

The Mirage 2000-9, advanced multi-role combat aircraft, is the last version ever produced of the Mirage 2000 family.

Adopted by nine air forces worldwide, 550 Mirage 2000 are currently in service, logging over 1,540,000 flying hours.

Operated in a wide variety of environment ranging from deserts to humid tropical countries, including polar and high-elevation area, deployed in many international training exercises and engaged in various fields of operation, the Mirage 2000 is a world reference in terms of availability and maintenance. Its interoperability and its performance have been well proven in combat.

Mirage 2000-9: the most advanced version in the
Mirage 2000 family

The Mirage 2000-9 design has taken advantage of this huge feed-back experience from the onset of the program to improve the aircraft, the navigation and weapon system, and to implement new functionalities.

As an example, operational experience especially within multinational forces, has shown the need for an increased fuel capacity and firing power.

This requirement has been fulfilled, among others, with the introduction into operational service within UAE AF & AD (United Arab Emirates Air Force & Air Defense) of the Mirage 2000-9, which is a significant upgrade from the previous versions of the Mirage 2000-5 series.

The Mirage 2000-9 integrates
- the additional operating capabilities specified and tailored by the UAE AF & AD,
- together with a lots of new technologies
- and functionalities directly issued from the experience gained from the RAFALE aircraft development.

Mirage 2000-9: a very ambitious program
This Mirage 2000-9 version is a very ambitious and successful program which embedded an incomparable number of new capabilities:

Navigation and Weapon System:
Modular avionics, new RDY-2 multimode radar, digital terrain following system, new IMEWS countermeasures suite, Thomrad radio with frequency evasion and enhanced encoding, glass cockpit with new LCD visualisations, 4-display digital recording system and night vision goggles compatibility, tactical data-link, gyro-Iaser inertial navigation system, navigation Forward Looking Infra-Red system (NAHAR)….

Air-to-Air role:
A unique capability available on the Mirage 2000-9 version, allows to use simultaneously IR and EM MICA in BVR mode (Beyond Visual Range) to deceive electronic warfare system of the target.

Air-to-Ground strikes:
Conventional bombs, day/night video and laser-guided bombs, “Black Shaheen” stand-off cruise missiles, long range recce pod, and “SHEHAB” laser designation pod.

Plus an in-flight refuelling capacity and the automatic speed control system thanks to the implementation of the autothrottle function.

Modular avionics and countermeasures suite are particularly worth mentioning in view of their unusual nature.

The Mirage 2000-9 is equipped with a pioneering IT “core system” architecture as of last generation aircraft (Rafale, F-22 & F-35/JSF).

When it comes to countermeasures, they break new ground by adopting interferometry technology, providing the aircraft with high self-protection capability and accurate EW threats localisation.

If KSA funds it otherwise Egypt can't buy these Mirages..those Mig-29s are also funded from KSA.

Egypt only paid for 20 or so F-16 Block 52s.

Despite the rumors of sales talks, they will see service with UAE for a while, F-16 Block-61 deliveries will take a couple of years plus the situation with ISIS is transforming the dynamics of the middle east, arab states which used to remain neutral now need all the fire power they can muster. UAE AF should squeeze as many flight hours from these as they can.

Its a huge missed opportunity for France, they should have accepted UAEs offer for a buy back in return for confirmed Rafael sales.

Who gets these Mirages is a ? Time will tell (still couple of years), guessing it wont be announced till the last moment and any potential buyer will try to hassle down the prices till they UAE AF has them in surplus and resort to throw away prices.

Well in July, Egypt, UAE and French authorities held a meeting for this deal. But one thing is sure that UAE will fly them for next few years more.

Well true to an extent but It really depends on their condition. Half of these UAE mirages fleet are hardly 10-12 years old and upgraded to -09 standard.

Exactly. Any other country who doesn't operate Mirage 2ks will have to set up new infrastructures and not to forget very expensive weapons from France. Won't make sense.

all in all these mirages are not for us better got jf-17s in this price

That makes sense. J10B procurement plan was dropped for similar reason even if it was easier to induct in PAF since there is commonality between weapons of Thunder and J10. In mirages case, Its a completely different aircraft with different weapon package.

As much as we wanted Mirage -5 potent platform in PAF colors but looks like PAF has marked JF-17 Block III as potential candidate and for similar reasons J-10 has also been dropped.

Actually it would be better to exercise the 18 additional F-16 Block-52s we had to cut down because of the 2008 earthquake.

Its the prospect of additional F-16 MLUs which made PAF to not opt for J-10s since both aircraft are in a similar league. JF-17s serve a different role/purpose.

All potential candidates off these Jets are facing severe economic problems

It is the UAE who is pushing the deal to Egypt which is already operating Mirage 2000s, the UAE can finance it easily for Egypt, since the latter, along with Jordan and maybe Morocco, is also supposed to join the GCC defense forces. In this regard it will be more of a shift of assets than anything else.
When we read in the article about US intervention in the deal, we should add on behalf of Usrael.
Wished Pakistan to get a dedicated squadron for its navy or other specialized tasks.
