DUBAI — A United Arab Emirates government official has confirmed to Defense News the government's interest in acquiring one of two French Mistral-class amphibious assault ships originally ordered by Russia in 2011.

France and Russia last month reached a political agreement to cancel the Mistral deal and Paris is paying back Moscow's advance payments on the two warships. France paid Russia more than US $1 billion in compensation for the non-delivery.

"Our interest in purchasing the ship is real, it fulfils the capability requirements for our forces," the government source said. "The Mistral ships are in line with our equipment and capabilities."

A report published Wednesday by Russian-language newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets quoted Russian military sources stating that Russia has given France the green light to sell the two helicopter carriers to Egypt and the UAE.

Russian Arabic-language television channel Russia Today quoted presidency spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying that his country hopes France, now free to use the ships after settling its dues, would take Russian interests into account when reselling the warships to a third party.

According to unnamed Russian sources close to the deal quoted by Moskovsky Komsomolets, Egypt will purchase the ship with direct Russian financial support and would also have to commit to the purchase of a number of Russian Ka-52 helicopters.

"If this deal goes through, for Russia it is very advantageous, since the loan is in fact a trademark: a large consignment of helicopters will be based at our Russian defense industry, taxes will go into our budget, and the borrower does not receive the money but the product — helicopters made in Russia," the source was quoted.

The UAE official did not confirm whether the deals were reached at the MAKS 2015 airshow in Moscow last week. No Egyptian officials were immediately available to comment.

Mistral-class amphibious assault ship
The Mistral class is a class of three amphibious assault ships, also known as a helicopter carrier, of the French Navy. Referred to as "projection and command ships" (French: bâtiments de projection et de commandement or BPC), a Mistral-class ship is capable of transporting and deploying 16 NH90 or Tiger helicopters, four landing barges, up to 70 vehicles including 13 AMX Leclerc tanks, or a 40-strong Leclerc tank battalion,[3] and 450 soldiers. The ships are equipped with a 69-bed hospital, and are capable of serving as part of a NATO Response Force, or with United Nations or European Union peace-keeping forces.

Three ships of the class are in service in the French Navy: Mistral,Tonnerre, and Dixmude. A deal for two ships for the Russian Navy was announced by then French President Nicolas Sarkozy on 24 December 2010, and signed by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin and French Defence Minister Alain Juppé in the presence of Sarkozy on 25 January 2011. On 3 September 2014, French President François Hollande announced the postponement of delivery of the first warship,Vladivostok, due to the Russia–Ukraine crisis. Following negotiations against the background of the War in Donbass and the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation, the French President François Hollande and the Russian president Vladimir Putin announced on 5 August 2015 that France will pay back partial payments and keep the two ships initially produced for the Russian Navy; the two ships were later sold to Egypt for about 950 million euros.

UAE interested in purchasing Mistral-class ships originally ordered by Russia

Russia has given approval to France to sell the two Mistral-class amphibious ships to either Egypt or the UAE, according to news reports out of Russia.

Russia originally ordered the ships but France has declined to deliver them because of Russia’s involvement in the crisis in Ukraine.

My Defense News colleague Awad Mustafa has written this article:

A United Arab Emirates government official has confirmed to Defense News the government’s interest in acquiring one of two French Mistral-class amphibious assault ships originally ordered by Russia in 2011.

The contract for the two ships was terminated after Russia halted payments for the ships following the European sanctions imposed on the country for its involvement in the Ukraine crisis. France paid Russia more than US $1 billion in compensation for the non-delivery.

“Our interest in purchasing the ship is real, it fulfils the capability requirements for our forces,” the government source said. “The Mistral ships are in line with our equipment and capabilities.”

I am not sure where this news originated from, but as of now, we are not buying.

@Indus Falcon Sir, can you confirm?

. .
Sir sources are qouted yet not confirmed but they confirmed the interest in buying.

The French wanted us to buy it. We didn't. The matter was subsequently closed, after the Egyptians bought it. Now this new report is surprising. and obviously when an "unnamed Govt. official" is quoted, it further dilutes the credibility.
