UAE and France sign deal for 80 Rafale fighter jets

UAE Air Force is already quite decent, I dont know why they want to spend huge money to buy 80 Rafales. Better spending the money for something more productive. They should start ordering new fighter in 2032 instead of now, to replace their Mirage 2000 with 5 generation fighters.

Waste of money if they were buyig F 35 otherwise they r very small country, 80 jets a huge number to defend

Saab gripen would have been better choice cheaper eady to main low cost better electronic warfare suit

Could have perfomed better with global e

Does France allow integration of weapons of non-French origin on the Rafale?

Possibly not, France will offer its own weapons to generate more revenues. IMO Frech weapons are quite good enough to fulfil most of the UAE requirements.

.
Couple of points

1) This order (if the planes are made in France) means any IAF follow on order may take 4-5 years to fufil
2) These jets will not be delivered for another 3-4 years, UAE will slowly start phasing out Mirage 2000-9 then, but this technology may be old hat by then (no AI, no AESA etc)
3) This seems very much the second option after F-35 issues

All in all great news for UAE, but nothing major in terms of changing the strategic balance, they already have the F-16E/F and decent stand off weapons. The Rafales give them Meteor but even this missile may be outranged very soon.

.
I remember when they bought those state of the art new Mirage 2000-9 and those F16 E/F Block 60 Desert Falcons

and now 80 x Rafale????

what happened to F35 did Israel not approve it?

total senseless more money than brains

Cementing ties with France, UAE places $19 bln order for warplanes, helicopters

DUBAI, Dec 3 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates ordered 80 Rafale fighter jets and 12 military helicopters on Friday, deepening economic and political ties with France through an arms contract worth 17 billion euros ($19.20 billion).

The largest ever overseas sale of the French warplane was sealed as French President Emmanuel Macron began a two-day trip to the Gulf, during which he will also visit Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

"These contracts are important for the economy and create jobs in France. What is good for French men and women, I defend ardently," Macron told reporters, dismissing concerns by activists that French arms sales in the Gulf were fuelling conflicts in the region.

The French presidency said the deal, signed at a ceremony between Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan (MBZ) and Macron on the sidelines of the Dubai Expo 2020, is worth $19 billion.

The first French warplanes will be delivered from 2027, officials, and would create some 7,000 jobs.

Macron's visit comes at a time when Gulf Arab states have voiced uncertainty about the United States' focus on the region even as they seek more weapons from their key security ally.

The French leader has forged a good relationship with MBZ with investments flowing between the two countries. Paris has a permanent military base in the Emirati capital.

Shares in Dassault Aviation SA , the Rafale's maker, rose more than 9%.

It is the biggest bulk purchase of the Dassault-made Rafale, other than by the French army, and comes after deals in Greece, Egypt and Croatia this year.

Abu Dhabi also ordered 12 Caracal helicopters. It is the French code name for the H225M, the multirole military version of the Super Puma.

The on-off negotiations for the Rafale fighter jets took more than a decade with Abu Dhabi publicly rebuffing France's offer to supply 60 Rafale jets in 2011 as "uncompetitive and unworkable". Abu Dhabi already has French-built Mirage 2000 warplanes.

"This French commitment in the region, this active cooperation in the fight against terrorism, the clear positions we have taken mean that we have increased our proximity to the UAE," Macron said.

"And at a time when they undoubtedly asked themselves more questions about other historical partners ... I think that this strengthens France's position," he said referring to the United States.

Defence sources said the Rafale would replace the Mirage 2000 fleet but is unlikely to displace the American-built F-35 as the UAE continues to hedge its security with two major suppliers, France and the United States.

The deal could nonetheless be seen as a signal of impatience as the U.S. Congress hesitates on approving an F-35 deal amid concerns about the UAE's relationship with China, including the prevalence of Huawei (HWT.UL) 5G technology in the country.

"That says a lot about the extraordinary aura that Abu Dhabi has acquired over Paris' ideological and strategic thinking — It is the first time that a close U.S. partner in the Arab world will rely more on French technology than American technology," said Jalel Harchaoui, a senior fellow at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.

Paris is one of the UAE's main arms' suppliers, but it has faced increasing pressure to review its sales because of the conflict between a Saudi-led coalition and the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen, which has become one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

"France is going ahead with these sales despite the UAE playing a leading role in the atrocity-marred military operations led by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen," Human Rights Watch said in a statement. "The French president should denounce the human rights violations in these three counties.

suckers have a lot of money to burn... Not worth it really.

They unveiled their own locally developed missiles and will unveil an air to air missile by 2025.

I think they would want them to be integrated haha.

I think the UAE will still push for the F-35. In a way, the Rafale would serve as the go-to multi-role fighter while the F-35 could be the strike option. Not only that, but I can see the UAE investing in an LHD if it can get the F-35B. These guys definitely have the hunger for projecting power and expeditionary operations. Finally, one of Europe's NGFAs would eventually become an option. I can't see the US simply letting billions slip away that easy.

.
well USA won't sale F-35 so it become a choice between Rafale or Eurofighter.

I think USA only weakened its position in Arm market by doing so. they could control these countries air force if they sold them the damn thing , simply if you didn't like them using them in a situation just disable the airplane remotely.

.
Wouldn't be suprised if they pursue developing jet powered UCAVs and loyal wingman type drones indigenously. Although they rely on mainly imported parts they have developed the ability to design and develop most projects from start to finish and have been acquiring a lot of Emirati engineers as well.

@Bilal Khan (Quwa)

Developing something like the HAL CATS Warrior would suit their needs well.

That's a massive number of jets they are buying, that would make them one of the most strongest Air force in the region.

UAE has not only signed for Rafales, but they will be getting F-35s as well. F-35s will be on the side where they keep their Block 60s and Rafales will be eventually replacing the Mirage 2000-9s

No F-35 to anyone in the region , except İsrael
BIDEN suspended the export of weapons to the UAE and Saudi Arabia

In mid-April this year, two US Democrats brought a bill that could block the deal to the UAE.
The bill called “Secure F-35 Exports Act of 2020," introduced by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, would require that any F-35 sale to a Middle Eastern country other than Israel not compromise Israel's military advantage

I wonder if there will be any customization of Rafales for UAE as previously they wanted uprated M-88 engines & conformal fuel tanks for extended range?

Any special electronics like Indian modifications or just standard F4??
