U.S., World Muslim Leaders’ Open Letter Refutes ISIS’s Ideology, Urges Supporters to ‘Repent,’ ‘Return to the Religion of Mercy’

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/24/14) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), in cooperation with the Fiqh Council of North America, today joined a number of national and local Muslim scholars and leaders at a National Press Club news conference in Washington, D.C., to release a first-of-its-kind open letter in Arabic (with English translation) signed by more than 120 international scholars of Islam and Muslim leaders refuting the ideology of the terrorist group ISIS and urging its supporters to repent and “return to the religion of mercy.”

[NOTE: The Fiqh Council of North America is an association of legal scholars that interprets Islamic religious law.]

Other scholars and leaders in the United States and worldwide are now being asked to add their names as signatories.

The
28-page open letter -- which uses classical religious references and covers 24 issues such as "the killing of innocents," "killing of emissaries," "jihad," "declaring people non-Muslim," "torture," and "the caliphate" -- is a result of deliberations by dozens of experts on Islamic law and offers a point-by-point deconstruction of any claimed religious justification for ISIS's brutal actions.
In its executive summary, the letter notes that Islam forbids the killing of innocent people, including diplomats, journalists and humanitarian aid workers. It also states that any jihad may only be defensive in nature with strict rules of conduct, that it is forbidden to harm religious minorities like Christians and Yazidis, and that it is forbidden to practice slavery, destroy religious shrines or deny the rights of women.
The letter's conclusion states:
"
Islam is mercy and its attributes are merciful. The Prophet (peace be upon him), who was sent as a mercy for all the worlds, summarized a Muslim's dealings with others by saying: 'He who shows no mercy, will not be shown mercy;' and: 'Have mercy and you will be shown mercy.' But, as can be seen from everything mentioned, you have misinterpreted Islam into a religion of harshness, brutality, torture and murder. As elucidated, this is a great wrong and an offence to Islam, to Muslims and to the entire world. Reconsider all your actions; desist from them; repent from them; cease harming others and return to the religion of mercy."

"The intended audiences for this important letter include those who have joined or may consider joining ISIS or similar extremist groups, as well as all those who are led to believe the falsehood that ISIS in any way represents Islamic beliefs or practices," said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad.

CAIR has repeatedly condemned the "un-Islamic and morally repugnant" violence and religious extremism of ISIS.

Surprise surprise... No coverage by american mainstream media. That would not suit the propaganda image.

Tell me, do you still feel like they have misunderstood you? or that they are specifically targeting you?

. . .
Well it's not exactly news to say: a bunch of Muslims followed their common sense is it?

On the other hand when someone supports Extremism, it is an uncommon act and therefore it is newsworthy. It is not some complex, calculated plan where every newspaper in the world is in collusion.

What 'propaganda message' is that and from whom ?

. . .
I heard about it today on NPR. I'd say that counts of mainstream.

MMMMmmmmmnnnn.... No. Also, did they broadcast it over and over? Bring "experts" to discuss it? Used colourful adjectives in their coverage? Gave it multiple coverage throughout the day and repeated coverage throughout the week? They sure do that when a muslim is on the other side of the news. So did they... or not?

??

Didn't think so.

A five second lip service/mention may be used by bigots to claim "fair coverage", but it is a sham argument. It's alot like having one token black man in a political party full of bigots to claim moral integrity. Bigots in western countries like to use this shady argument often. The muslims are not convinced by such seedy tactics of bigotry.

If you're asking if they turned it into a media circus, no, they didn't. I don't pay attention to news sources that do that. They spent half an hour talking about it with a representative from CAIR, then moved on. It was mentioned again later in a story about teenage Muslims' response to ISIS. However, seeing as how you decided to answer the question you arbitrarily posed to me, we'll just say they spent no time on it, and then launched into a vicious diatribe vilifying the Muslim population at large.

It is not about how he posed the question to you but how he posed reality to you which is annoying yet true!

The repeated coverage of 9/11, Boston shooting and god knows how many other crimes even the smallest ones receive ample time while THIS IS BIG NEWS....an OPEN LETTER from MUSLIM LEADERS to the ISIS (current stuff) declaring them as outcasts ...I think this is big news of an open rejection that Indians have been crying on this forum for....asking repeatedly why NO AUTHORITY has rejected ISIS ...

On top of that....they have EXPERTS IN THE FIELD to answer all the falsified claims people have been taunting Muslims with:

So why didn't they turn it into a media circus? Why didn't the rest of the media (tv..etc) catch on? After all, a peaceful statement like that coming from the savage terrorising western-hating backward arab/muslims would be a BIG SHOCK to them. Right?.. Right guys?

??

Don't make me laugh.
