The FN SCAR Reaches FINAL Milestone
UNITED STATES - 6 MAY 2010

FN Herstal, S.A. (FN) received notification from the USSOCOM Program Executive Office—SOF Warrior (PEO—SW) that the SCAR Acquisition Decision Memorandum (ADM) was approved and signed on April 14, 2010, moving this FN program into the Milestone C phase.

This decision authorizes the production and deployment of the Special Operations Forces (SOF) Combat Assault Rifle (SCAR) MK 16 and MK 17, as well as the Enhanced Grenade Launcher Module (EGLM) MK 13.

Following a worldwide solicitation to the military firearms industry, nine vendors submitted a dozen different designs for a new modular, multi-caliber weapons system. The FN SCAR submission was the only weapons system to pass all of the Go/No-Go criteria and was unanimously chosen in November 2004 by the selection board composed of senior operators from every SOF component.

The SCAR is the first new assault rifle procured by the U.S. military through a full and open competition since the M16 trials were held in the mid-1960s. Tests in reliability, accuracy, safety and ergonomics were administered from August 2005 to September 2008 and were conducted in a variety of environments including urban, maritime, jungle and winter/mountain operational test scenarios.

The SCAR weapons system successfully endured more than two million rounds of ammunition during these trials, therein making it one of the most heavily tested weapons in the history of small arms.

The FN SCAR system consists of two highly adaptable modular rifle platforms and a grenade launcher. Type-designated as the MK 16 MOD 0 5.56mm Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle and the MK 17 MOD 0 7.62mm Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle, both weapons are available with three different barrel lengths optimized for conducting operations in close-quarters combat, standard infantry and longer-range precision fire roles.

All SCAR barrels can be easily interchanged by the operator in just minutes to instantly meet the requirements of virtually any mission. The MK 13 MOD 0 40mm Enhanced Grenade Launcher Module (EGLM) quickly mounts under the barrel of either SCAR platform, providing additional capability to the individual warfighter’s firepower, and can be easily configured for use as a stand-alone weapon as well.

Because of the SCAR system’s modular design, ergonomic commonality (100%) and parts commonality (greater than 80%), it represents a significant reduction in training costs and life-cycle support. The weapon system’s open architecture is designed to support future advancements in operational requirements including ammunition, aiming devices, sighting systems and other mission critical equipment.

I have always liked FN weapons. they have a quality a lot of manufactures lack. It would be interesting to see what the recoil and control ability is like on the Mk-17 (7.62mm)

FN 5.56 SCAR® Retained in USSOCOM's Inventory
7 JULY 2010

Belgium-based firearms manufacturer FN Herstal hereby refutes the allegations recently found on the web that USSOCOM abandoned the 5.56 version of the SCAR® rifle and reconfirms USSOCOM's decision to acquire the full FN SCAR® family of weapons, including the 5.56mm rifle.

The FN SCAR® family of weapons consists of the 5.56mm SCAR® rifle, 7.62mm SCAR® rifle and 40mm LV Enhanced Grenade Launcher Module (respectively designated as MK 16, MK 17 and MK 13 by USSOCOM). These three components were developed by FN Herstal in close cooperation with USSOCOM and have each met all the operational and fielding tests required by the program. This resulted in the notification by USSOCOM last May that the full SCAR® system entered into Milestone C phase, allowing production and deployment of the full range of SCAR® weapons. The 5.56 version will be part of USSOCOM's inventory.

The choice between the 5.56 and the 7.62 caliber will be left to the discretion of each constitutive component of USSOCOM's Joint Command (e.g. Seals, Rangers, Army Special Forces, USMC, AFSOC) depending on their specific missions on today's battlefield.

actually it is the other way around. The Ruger appears to look similar to the FN-FNC developed in the 1970's. Though it definitley has AR-15 design to

My favorite cross designed rifle is the Israeli Galil. It has FN and AK-47 characteristics rolled into one. I owned one myself for awhile in 5.56mm

Awesome weapon with the only draw back being it's weight and the crease it put in the shell casings. (I like to reload ammo)

T ...........I was looking into getting it. Is it heavier than AK? What about accuracy? Alos looking into putting together an AR10 but no idea how accurate and practical those are for SHTF.

When I say heavier I was comparing it to the other 5.56mm choice I was making at the time before I decided on the Galil, Which was the AR-15 civilian Sporter model. I decided on the Galil becuase of it's AK-47 action.

Galil AR 5.56mm: 3.95 kg (8.7 lb)

AK-47 7.62X39mm 4.3 kg (9.5 lb)

AR-15 civilian sporter model 5.6 lb (2.54 kg)

For what Galil costs these days for the same money you could buy the FN Scar as well.
