BERLIN (Reuters) - The U.S. military has deployed its most advanced air and missile defense system to Israel for the first time, U.S. and Israeli military officials said on Monday.

The deployment, which began in March, was intended to test the U.S. military’s ability to rapidly deploy such weapons around the world, said a spokeswoman for U.S. European Command.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the arrival of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system as a sign of the U.S. commitment to Israeli security.

“The American THAAD system is considered among the most advanced systems in the world, and together with our defense systems, we are stronger in dealing with threats, close or distant, emanating from all areas of the Middle East,” he said.

The move comes amid increased tensions between Israel and Iran over Israel’s bombing campaign in Syria and comments in which Iran’s foreign minister said he could not rule out the possibility of military conflict between the two countries.

The U.S. military said the decision to rapidly move the THAAD system to Israel was intended “as a demonstration of the United States’ continued commitment to Israel’s regional security.”

“THAAD is the most advanced integrated air and missile defense system in the world, and this deployment readiness exercise demonstrates that U.S. forces are agile and can respond quickly and unpredictably to any threat, anywhere, at any time,” U.S. European Command said in a statement.

Lockheed Martin, the biggest U.S. arms maker, builds and integrates the THAAD system, which is designed to shoot down short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. Raytheon, another U.S. firm, builds its advanced radar.

As part of the deployment, U.S. forces will work at various locations in Europe, the United States and in Israel to operate the system in close cooperation with the Israel Defense Forces, it said. U.S. officials declined to say how quickly the system was moved to Israel from its home base at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Israeli military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said the deployment differed from previous simulated U.S.-Israel joint military exercises and involved tactical coordination on the ground.

He said all of the components of the THAAD system were at an air force base in the Negev desert, in southern Israel, and would soon be moved to an undisclosed site in southern Israel.

“The advantage from the Israeli point of view is that we have an opportunity to integrate it into our systems and simulate different scenarios,” he said.

The IDF said the deployment was defensive in nature and not related to any specific current event.

Saudi Arabia agreed in November to buy 44 THAAD launchers, missiles and related equipment from the United States in a separate deal valued at $15 billion.

The AN/TPY-2 AESA radar system was installed in Israel back in 2008.

Now the remainder of the system is being stationed there (i.e. Israel).

Guys, is this just a coincidence or this is a response to Pakistan's response to Israeli aid to India ?

Article clearly says that deployment began in March however I am not sure if it was planned earlier or even the deployment was made after 27th february ...

The Israeli army regarded the deployment of US THAAD missile defense system for the first time in Israel as an indication of boosting bilateral historical relations and a strategic alliance.

However, political opposition figures in Tel Aviv said that the timing was not coincidental, as it reflected obvious efforts by US President Donald Trump to see his friend and ally, Benjamin Netanyahu, as prime minister of the Israeli government once again after the upcoming elections.

The Israeli army has earlier revealed that as part of a drill conducted by the United States European Command (EUCOM), the US military will deploy for the first time the THAAD missile defense system in Israel.

It said the drill was conducted few days after the two countries completed a more routine joint exercise, Juniper Falcon, as part of the joint operation of the system to practice rapid deployment across the globe of complex systems.

The drill “emphasizes the US’ commitment to the defense and security of Israel.”

“The Israeli army is working in cooperation with US forces in order to enhance coordination between the two militaries and to strengthen the ability to defend Israeli airspace,” the army added.

It is also considered a chance to enhance cooperation with the Israeli army’s air defense systems.

The army also said it “stands ready to protect Israel’s airspace and civilians against a variety of threats from near and far,” noting that “this is a defensive deployment that is not related to any specific current event.”

Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) is considered one of the world’s most advanced defense systems that intercepts short- and medium-range ballistic missiles.

Its capabilities are determined by factors such as location, range, and threat characteristics.

The system has capabilities within and beyond the air layer, using kinetic energy to intercept missiles.

According to the Israeli army, this system constitutes a “qualitative addition to the Israeli air defense capabilities specialized against long-range ballistic missiles”.

Whatever measures the USA can offer to counter the threat to Israel from Iran is completely logical. If Iran's ability to strike Israel can be minimized, then Iran's power over USA foreign policy, and its threats to allies of the USA within range of Iran, are weakened. Whatever the USA can undertake to weaken and thwart Iran is 100% logical for USA interests.

Nah, it's intended to give Israel advantage to all its neighbors. Turkey and Saudi Arabia militarily pose a greater threat to Israel than Iran. Iran poses only a threat to some neighboring Arab nations. Should have been deployed in Saudi Arabia, but seems like for political purposes US establishment want to coerce Saudi Arabia into symbolic cooperation with Israel. Aimed at burying the Palestinian cause away but also to demonize Saudi's among their own audience(local peoples) to justify militia incursion of Saudi Arabia in future(already happening and working as they want).

Saudi gov't is too naive to realize what's happening, and MBS actually believes he is the influential one that has many cards to play.
