(Reuters) - Undeterred by violence over the planned removal of a Confederate statue in Charlottesville, Virginia, state and city leaders across various U.S. southern states said this week they would step up efforts to pull such monuments from public spaces.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan on Tuesday joined a growing list of officials seeking to remove statues as a national debate flared anew over whether monuments to the Confederacy are symbols of hate or heritage.

. .
Never understood the veneration for the Confederacy, especially in the South, given that they were not only traitors, but lost the Civil War. Proponents of the Confederacy claims it's about state rights. Yeah, state rights to support slavery!

It's good that these statues are removed from the public square and sent to the dustbin of history.

This is like Poland putting up statues to celebrate the nazis who invaded their country.

But Union did not fight to abolish slavery either.

Pres. Abraham Lincoln said, "I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so." Abolitionism grew in the Union army as soldiers saw slaves flocking to them for freedom. It wasn't until the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, which left slavery intact in border states that hadn't seceded, that ending Confederate slavery became an official Union aim. So banning slavery was ploy to win the war against the confederates.

This is like Poland putting up statues to celebrate the nazis who invaded their country.

Bad analogy. The statues are of the heros of the confederate soldiers. So they are defending their forefathers.

The correct analogy would be for current Germans with Nazi inclination fighting for the statues of Hitler.

now this will piss off white nationalists

Yeah, state rights to support slavery!

During the mid to late years of the Civil War the Confederacy was beginning to ban slavery. During the Civil War and well after Lincoln's Emancipation there were slaves in the North. Generals leading the Union had slaves.

If you want to view Gen. Robert E Lee purely through his involvement of the Civil War that's like viewing Bill Clinton's 8 year term purely for his 50 second sex session with that chick who wasn't his wife. Lee was well respected in America, Lincoln even requested that he lead the Union Army, but being from Virginia he didn't want to go against his home. Lee served during the American Mexican War, even reluctanly obeyed the, then War Department (Pentagon) into being the headmaster of West Point back when it was a shitty place. Lee didn't like slavery he hated it, and even claim that if he owned every slave in the south he'd free them. He was the supreme advocate for integrating former slaves into a free society, giving them education, health care, and equality after the war.

Arlington Cemetery is on his Lee's former property.

I have to agree with Trump, whats next removal of George Washington? Or Ben Franklin because he liked being nude? We're talking about a different time. There are statues of Lenin standing tall.

The moment the counter-protesters began walking towards the white supremacists they were looking to pick a fight. And they fell into the trap the racists set. This was never about the statue of Lee. The supremacists wanted a fight and came prepared for it, while the antifa and company thought there wouldn't be consequence for marching into the face of a phalanx formation so came empty handed.

This is worrisome. These racists are no longer in the shadows or walking around burning crosses with hoods on. They are real. They are flexing their muscle and have shown they prepared for a long time.

The biggest irony of the "Unite the Right" neo-Confederate/White supremacist nonsense is that it has brought a ton attention to these Confederate (traitorous) monuments, and will hasten the removal of many of them.

Good job "Alt-right". :enjoy:

It already has: Charlottesville.

America is a country that constantly reminds others about human rights etc. Yet, this is a country so deeply divided on the issue of race. A sizable portion of the American people demand the reinstatement of slavery. Yep, they believe that slavery is their God given biblical privilege. Something which is a horrific black chapter of the American history. These people walk around with their confederate flags, torches and want to kill anyone who doesn't look or think like them. They ram cars into people in broad daylight. They want to worship statues of people who were slave owners including highly distinguished former US presidents. If you try to remove their beloved statues you are branded an enemy.

It is an ugly and bizarre situation, but one which will keep rearing its head. America will continue to grapple with white supremacy because this is part and parcel of their history. It cannot be removed. Today, we have a president who blames both sides and is a Nazi himself. America is a racist country where its own president protects and promotes the Nazi agenda. President Trump elects former Nazis as his aides in the government and feels no shame in implementing their ideas. No wonder this country wants to completely ban Muslims and build walls. It perfectly fits the Nazi ideology.

Good going America. Today, it is your turn to have a deep look in the mirror.

Most Southern Whites are decent folks and great gentlemen. I would give them a pass on a few Confederate statues

. . . .
This is a fairly complex issue.
Personally, I think it makes sense to have a statue of Robert E. Lee somewhere.
The southern states decided to seceed from the US.
He was faced with dual loyalties and had to choose.
He was well respected even after that.

It is also the right of state/town governments to choose what they want to have on public lands,
so I am OK with moving the statue somewhere else.

The violence displayed by the protesters against this is unacceptable.

Likewise, it is not acceptable to have a mob tear down a statue.
Those identified in participating in this should pay for a new statue.
This statue should remain in place for a certain period, maybe 10 years,
and then a decision should be made whether to move it ir not.
Meanwhile, the downtearers should be tasked to protect the statue.
If any damage is done to the statue, they will have to pay new damages,

They need to understand it is a government decision, not a mob decision.
