Russia gave a couple of uninhabited islands in the river totalling 174 sq km to China in 2008 in exchange for China to drop all territorial claims on Russia. IMO if Japan wants Kurils, the MOST that Russia can give is the uninhabited Habomai rocks. Shikotan, Iturup, Kunashiri each have thousands of Russian civilians and therefore it is impossible for Russia to give any of Shikotan, Iturup, Kunashiri to Japan.

Why Russia-Japan border dispute is directly bad for India? It is because Russia and Japan are real investors in India. They are not like West who publicly pay lip-service to FDI but covertly orchestrate and sponsor anti-FDI protests. When Russia and Japan fight, they fight intensely. One of them (either Russia or Japan) may be destroyed and India would be the loser. India would lose one of the two genuinely useful friends.
