U.S. and Iran discuss Syrian crisis in back-channel diplomacy: report

Iranian and U.S. government representatives have discussed ways to prevent Syria from descending into bloody chaos should the regime of embattled President Bashar al-Assad collapse, French daily newspaper Le Figaro reported on Sunday, quoting a Syrian opposition figure in exile.

The paper said the back-channel diplomacy between American and Iranian diplomats occurred at two meetings, one at the end of August and one at the beginning of September, but it did not indicate where.

“They spoke about putting in place a high military council on the Egyptian model, with generals running the country and responsible for making senior strategic options,” the paper quoted the Syrian opposition figure as saying.

According to a French diplomat in charge of the Syrian crisis quoted in the report, Iranian officials have adapted to the idea of a new government in Damascus and “even to a change at the top of the regime.”

The diplomat said that Iran was keen to avoid a civil war in Syria, as it could spill over across its border. The paper said the relationship between Tehran and Damascus was not balanced, which explains the influence Iran has on the regime in Damascus.

American diplomats urged Iranians not to disrupt stability in Iraq before the complete pullout of U.S. troops by the end of 2011 and to stop supporting “terror” groups in the region, namely Hamas and Hezbollah. From their side, Iranians asked the United States not to support a post-Assad regime that is hostile to Iran.

Both parties agreed that any future regime in Syrian should have a “regional” scope and enjoy friendly ties with different powers in the Middle East, the paper reported.

Quoting French ambassador to Damascus Eric Chevallier speaking before the foreign affairs committee at the French National Assembly, the paper said Iranians recently advised the Syrians to stop firing in the streets, urging them instead to identify the leaders of the uprising and arrest them at night.

This, the report says, indicates the Iranian ambiguity about Syria. Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi recently denounced the use of excessive force against civilians in Syria, but Iran’s Revolutionary Guards continue to deploy special forces in Syria to help quell the uprising there.

The Islamic Republic even deployed special military units to fight along former Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi’s forces in Libya; the goal was to prolong the war so that international public attention was deflected from Syria, according to the report. Anticipating Qaddafi’s fall, Iran ordered its special forces out of Libya to join Sudan and Syria.

Hillary wants to punish Iran for alleged diplomat assassination plot but conducts back channel diplomacy on Syria which has no co-relation with either Persian history or culture. Someone is being treachareous here, either the US of A or Iran but all I can say is...Muslim beware, some dirty plots are in progress.

Here is the golden lining

Pact of mutual and tactical tolerance of each other ambitions in the region...Iran = crypto-zionist!

^^ First US needs to stop acting like a moron towards Iran, then maybe we think of an agreement

.
Please US took out Iraq and Afghanistan both hostile countries to Iran and installed Iran friendly governments there. I don't know about you but there is certainly team work going on. Before Iraq and Afghanistan nobody would even know what Iran is.

So yeah Iran should thank the US hands and feet for giving it a strength boost.

IranZamin jon, you're right.
but look we are the country that is the nearest possible friend of USA . There is misunderstand and some unrespect
I hope one day we clear it and make our countries cooperate.

WHy we cannot remember our great past. We were the wise country in the region, the one who protected the Armenians who protected the Jews we were the ones with the impressive administration system that Alexander was jealous of it.

Many Iranians want a good relation with USA. It is time to go on.

.
i still think, usa and iran can be very good friends..there will be no war b/w them.

That is already happening

Lets not forget that those two regimes were also a by-product of Anglo-Saxon imperialism and they were installed at the behest of people in the region. Kings and dictators selling our their nation for the benefit of Zionist. Saddam, Fahd, Taliban, AQ, you name it are all part of same string. Why infest our home with destruction for the benefit of Zionists when the hard truth is that we and our future generation will continue to live in this region and pay heavy price. It goes if all parties play in greater benefit of the region and stop undercover co-operation with foreign regimes which only have interest in the regional resources aka oil and not its people. Its time the ayatollahs of Iran are changed with a regime which plays in the interest of the region so there will be no purpose to host US naval fleet in the Arabian Gulf.

yeah sure good friend give kind sanctions as gift
yeah sure there is a strong military economical relation between USA and Iran. everyone knows it.. i mean maybe not everyone maybe just saudis .

lol at the wahabis in this thread

Iran and USA are buddies
arab logic at its ******* best haha

arabs, when the americans attacked Iraq and threw out the sunni dictator, they allowed the country to choose its next leaders in elections. Now I don't knos if the following little bit of info reached Arabia or not but the majority of that country is SHIA and the people of Iraq are also SECTERIAN as hell. You know what that means? It means shias got to power because they have the support of the majority of the people. It also happened that Saddam hated shias so all the shia top dogs were living in Iran during the whole Saddam era. After he was gone they went back and ran for elections and got to power.

The only person that made a mistake here was sunni Saddam for kicking out the top dogs to Iran for 20 YEARS! I guess by your wonderful logics than Iran and Saddam were buddies

haha

1- in desert storm Iraq was counting on Iran to store its jets so Saddam sent his jets there for safe keeps and Iran agreed but then they wouldn't give it back saying it is a compensation of the war.
2-So according to your logic US was naive and stupid and lost Iraq out of the goodness of its heart.

haha this is gold!
Now you're saying Iran and Saddam were allies? haha wow
Saddam's pilots simply deserted to Iran and then saddam demanded that we give his planes back. And even if it was a policy of saddam himself, ARE YOU ******* KIDDING me? Saddam was a ******* dumb ***. Things like this are not out of character for arab dictators like saddam, ghaddafi, mubarak, khalifa etc...

And no, the Americans weren't stupid. They miscalculated. They simply didn't understand the secterian and tribal nature of the country that they were invading. They thought that Iran would be the last country on earth that Iraqis would ally themselves to for the simple reason that they fought a bloody war for 8 years. They didn't understand the loyalties in Arab countries are not for the country but for religion and tribe. Shias represent the clear majority and the sunnis are devided b/in Kurds and Arabs. That means that Arab sunnis are a clear minority in the country. Unless you put another dictator in charge, Shia/Kurdish regions of IRaq will always move towards Iran more than the rest of the arab world. Just because you people are too simple minded to not understand simple matters like this, it doesn't mean there are conspiracies going on here.

Teapot calling the kettle black. Iran's dialogue with the United States cannot even be compared to the massive cooperation between Saudi Arabia and USA.
