UK university expels student who had picture of Jew with Palestinian flag on his mouth

A Nottingham Trent University (NTU) student has been “permanently excluded” for using as his profile picture a selfie with an Orthodox Jewish man sleeping on a train and placing a Palestinian flag over his mouth.

The South Asian British student uploaded the picture to his Tinder dating profile, which sparked outrage after it was screenshotted and shared on Twitter last month.

The university confirmed that the first-year student, known as Jonathan, has been expelled following a controversial social media post which caused several people to directly link NTU and highlight the issue, labelling it “sickening antisemitism” and accusing him of treating Jews “as if they’re animals in a zoo.”

An NTU spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a student has been permanently excluded from the university, relating to offensive content which circulated on social media in September.”

“We launched an investigation the moment we were made aware of a screen grab which showed unacceptable behaviour from a student on their personal profile.”

“The student – who had not yet started his first year at the university – was immediately identified, interviewed and suspended, and a university disciplinary panel was convened to decide upon appropriate action. During our investigation we were informed that a Palestinian flag had been super-imposed over the mouth of a man in the image.”

“This behaviour was completely unacceptable and is not recognised as part of our university’s culture. We have a diverse, inclusive and global community of which we are proud, and we endeavour to create an atmosphere of mutual trust, harmony and respect.”

“Any behaviour which deviates from this will not be tolerated at NTU.”

Before being permanently excluded, student news outlet Nottingham Tab reported Jonathan regretted posing the picture and denied being anti-Semitic: “It was indeed a terrible picture, absolutely insensitive and should not have been taken in the first place.”

“I should also mention the fact that I am in no way antisemitic or have any kind of prejudice towards Jews.”

He is South Asian?

But he is worried about Palestine?

And now he is permanently excluded from the university.

All this while two days ago (23 October) the following was reported:

The number of Arab university students has doubled in Israel over the last decade, jumping from 24,000 in 2008 to 51,000 this year, according to figures published by Israel's Higher Council for Education on Monday to mark the beginning of the new academic year.

So, the Israeli Arabs (formerly known as Palestinians) are studying in Israel, while this South Asian Ummah Bhai has ruined his academic career (well at least for the time being) for the Palestinian 'cause'.

If only he had taken the red pill.

Not sure if you read your own article, but the name of this guy is Jonathan, unlikely to be what you would call "Ummah Bhai", and the photo sparked outrage because it has a Jew with Palestine flag in his mouth while this guy is smiling and sharing, so i dont see how he is supporting the Palestinian 'cause' as you claim

@jericho

Not sure if you read your own article,

I do actually.

but the name of this guy is Jonathan, unlikely to be what you would call "Ummah Bhai",

Jonathan can still be a Muslim.

Not every Muslim needs to have an Arab name.

and the photo sparked outrage because it has a Jew with Palestine flag in his mouth while this guy is smiling and sharing, so i dont see how he is supporting the Palestinian 'cause' as you claim

You do not see it?

He does indicate with his actions that he is more pro-Palestine or at least anti-Jewish or anti-Israeli.

That was my thought also. Wtf has any of this to do with a "Palestinian cause"?

Why do you mock Islam by saying "ummah bhai"? Why do you hate Islam so much?

He may well be antisemitic for attacking some random Jewish guy with a Photoshop job. But he has just used the Palestinian flag to troll this guy. Doesn't mean he is supporting or trying to support a palestinian cause. He is picking something that is designed to - at least in his imbecilic mind - insult a complete stranger who is visibly Jewish.

You are correct, but there is no indication of him being a Muslim, so I dont know how you can say he is an 'Ummah Bhai', he may be or he may not but there is absolutely no indication of that, and his name is not of a common Muslim, so it is more likely that he isnt

not really, i dont follow that same mindset and to me the whole thing is weird, so I dont know what exactly did he accomplish by doing this

some mischief done by this student ,
good decision .

Three completely different things that shouldn't be conflated. Of the three, he has only suggested the possibility of being "anti-Jewish". Neither of the other two options appear to apply based on this photo alone.

Dude this retard doesn't understand that Christians are more anti-jewish than Muslims... Honestly, I don't understand why they let these people come on this forum. His post is motivated by hatred for Muslims.

It's you who is extrapolating beyond that which is actually evident.

He might have used the Palestinian flag just to troll this Jew.
He might just only be anti-Jewish.
That could be correct.

But do you really think that?

In a short time you gave me four replies, of which all four said in -different ways- that he was not supporting the Palestinian cause and that I cannot assume that.

Maybe I did assume that he was supporting the Palestinian cause.
Not so much because he had photoshopped a flag on the mouth of the Jew, but more because he is a South Asian. That is why I actually assumed it.

Before I joined PDF, I did not know much about Pakistanis.
After I joined PDF, I found out that many Pakistanis believe in this so called 'Ummah' concept.
And when these Pakistanis find out that this concept is one sided, they get very emotional.

Just like you did with your four replies.

Something tells me that you do not want to believe that although Pakistanis and other non-Arab Muslims sacrifice themselves for (the cause of) Arabs, Arabs do not reciprocate this favour.

But there I go again.
Assuming.
I should not have done that.

The South Asian student was not supporting the Palestinian cause.
There is an Ummah in this world.
And Palestine did not gave their highest civilian order to the prime minister of a country that is Pakistan's enemy.

I apologize to you and I stand corrected.

@M.Bison

Why do you mock Islam by saying "ummah bhai"? Why do you hate Islam so much?

I actually do not hate Islam.
I even have a lot of respect for Arabs.

They spread a religion by the sword and by love.
They also made people believe that they should forget about their own heritage and become as Arab as possible, thinking that that will make them a better Muslim.

This eventually made these people not sure of their identity.
They developed an inferiority complex towards Arabs.
You know who I am talking about.

From these type of people the 'Ummah Bhais' come.

Do not try to deny this.

So, what I hate are people who do not have any self respect.
People who sacrifice themselves for those people who do not do the same in return.

Last year the PM of India received the highest civilian award from Palestine (10 Febuary 2018).

https://www.thehindu.com/news/natio...of-the-state-of-palestine/article22714293.ece

Yet, three months later (May 18, 2018):

Pakistan observes Palestine Solidarity Day today (Friday) to express solidarity with the Palestinians who lost their lives to barbaric violence in Gaza.

https://arynews.tv/en/pakistan-observes-palestine-solidarity-day-today/

Think about that.

Dude this retard doesn't understand that Christians are more anti-jewish than Muslims...

Christians might have been more anti-Jewish during the Middle Ages, but nowadays I would say that Muslims are more anti-Jewish. But I really do not care who is more anti-Jewish. That was not the point I was trying to make.

@jericho

You are correct, but there is no indication of him being a Muslim, so I dont know how you can say he is an 'Ummah Bhai', he may be or he may not but there is absolutely no indication of that, and his name is not of a common Muslim, so it is more likely that he isnt

He could be a Muslim, a Christian, an Hindu, an atheist or whatever.

Like I said to another member, I should not have assumed that he was a Muslim (and probably also Pakistani).

It is just that I read a lot of articles and a couple of months ago I read an article about Bradford where a lot of Pakistanis live. This

In this article I read the following:

Galloway, who heads something called the Respect Party, has declared the city “an Israel-free zone.”

The leader of the Respect Party calls Bradford “the city of gold,” and has been going around the city in an old Rolls Royce, or an open-top double-decker bus fluttering with Pakistani and Palestinian flags.

Those present are almost entirely Asian men — Pakistanis, almost to a man.

This article (and other articles which I read and of course PDF) gave me the impression that Pakistanis in the U.K. do care about the Palestinian cause (which I why assumed that the student is Muslim and Pakistani).

And that they would, for example, vote for a politician that not only cares about the Pakistani community but also about Palestine.

I found that strange.

Do you think that Palestinians in other countries expect a politician to care about Pakistan?
I have not heard of one instance that such has happened.

Have you?

not really, i dont follow that same mindset and to me the whole thing is weird, so I dont know what exactly did he accomplish by doing this

What you said here, could also apply to Pakistanis in the U.K. worrying about Palestine because of the so called Ummah.

Again you're putting words into people's mouths. I was pointing out the flaw in your biased viewpoint, that you join up a load of dots to suit your predetermined overarching narrative. I really don't care what conclusions you draw from knowing what Pakistanis on what forum. There are plenty of clowns out there in UK universities who would do such a thing and have (a) no interest in "ummah" politics and (b) have no interest in "Palestinian causes". I'm simply pointing out to you that antisemitism can exist in itself and cases should be assessed individually on their merits, not by making assumptions and pigeon holing them under a certain broader narrative.

How on earth you made some further assumption on MY OWN opinions on the basis of my objective analysis of the flaws in your assumptions is truly beyond me. Where on earth did I state or suggest I subscribe to any specific viewpoint about Jews, Israelis, Palestinians etc in this thread? If you knew anything about me, you wouldn't be making such assumptions off the back of my perfectly reasonable crticism. You are revealing your own bias in your comments towards me by making these baseless assumptions about me.
