Two policemen were killed when militants fired upon them in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, some 90 kms from summer capital Srinagar, sources said.
They said two policemen were critically injured after militants fired upon them at main chowk in Handwara around 11:00 AM today. "They died while being taken to a hospital in Srinagar, the two policemen died," sources added.
The slain were identified as Azad Chand and Santosh Kumar of Indian Reserve Police (IRP) 16 Bn.
The type of a militant attack in Handwara town has taken place after 21 years, they added.
No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
