SRINAGAR: Two police men have been shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar, witnesses say.
They say gunmen fired from a point-blank range at the policemen on duty at Hanuman Mandir area of Hari Singh High Street.
Head Constable Mohammed Maqbool and Constable Nazir Ahmed died on the spot, a police officer told Freepress.
A civilian girl identified as Ishrat, resident of Ganderbal, has also been wounded in the attack.
The gunmen managed to escape from the area which witnesses a huge rush of shoppers.
The attack comes just a day after police launched a spontaneous search operation in the city centre, taking people by surprise.
Violence involving militants and security forces has dropped sharply in Kashmir. But encounters and shoot-outs do take place randomly.

Hizb owns responsibility for Srinagar shootout

Srinagar: Militant outfit, Hizbul Mujahideen has owned responsibility for attack on policemen at Hari Sing High Street here in which two policemen were killed and a civilian injured.
In a telephonic message to KNS, a caller identifying himself as Baleeguddin, Spokesman of Hizbul Mujahideen said guerillas of the outfit carried out the attack on a police party.
