Two Auto Industry Veterans Sign MoU to Start EV Manufacturing in Pakistan

In a recent report shared by Automark, it has been revealed that two veteran automotive concerns have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up an Electric Vehicles (EV) and Electric Batteries Manufacturing/Assembly Plant at Karachi.

The companies in question, are Wah Nobel Group of Companies and Sheikh Zia-ul-Haq & Sons (PVT) LTD. Reportedly, the project is set to commence in 2022 and will deal with the manufacturing and assembling of various electric buses and their parts, including batteries.

This is yet another major step forward in the direction of introducing electric transport to the country.

A couple of days ago, an MoU signing ceremony took place between the Minister of Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry and the CEO of a European Electric Bus Manufacturing Company EGV. The minister told the media that the said manufacturer will invest $4 billion to set up an electric bus manufacturing plant in Pakistan.
Also 2 months ago, Daewoo Pakistan Express Bus Service also formed an alliance with Skywell Automobile, a Chinese automaker, to introduce electric buses in Pakistan.

The minister told the media that the electric buses will start running on Pakistani roads by the end of 2020. In the same session, the minister announced that the federal government will import 120 electric buses before the end of 2020 and that the local manufacturing of the electric buses will begin by 2021.

Exactly as you said, the infrastructure for EVs and manufacturing should go thru hand in hand to reap maximum benefit of GREEN ENERGY revolution.

I agree. However, my personal benefit is in the electric car. I also wonder why we cannot implement the same simultaneously.

Electronics in both is more or less the same. Batteries will have to be same too as no assembler in Pakistan will likely be able to afford premium batteries. Bodywork can be made locally.

For everything else, the supply chain might be a pain. Vehicles have huge BOMs. Some specialty parts can easily vary by few digits in cost depending on supply chain, especially if everything have to be imported.

My own experience with it was having to import stupid high amperage wire to board connectors for a few dollars each when I working on an escooter assembly line in Canada. You only need 2 per battery pack, but they tend to be quite bulky, and heavy for such a minor part, and the only vendor who was selling them overseas was selling them individually packed.

Second to that was buying shocks for scooters. You cannot find any part vendor ready to work with such small quantities as out line had (80-100 scooters a month.) And you had to buy them at near retail prices.

It is high time that Pakistan reduce its dependencies on petrol engines vehicles and transition into electric vehicle for all its mass population.
The more oil imported only hurts Pakistani rupees economically.

Daewoo Pakistan Express Bus service is different from Tata Daewoo commercial vehicle company.

The article suggests that DPEB is working with a Chinese company to introduce Electric Buses in Pakistan.
