Turkish army convoy enters Syria to reinforce base
A Turkish convoy has carried “aid” into Syria, Prime MinisterRecep Tayyip Erdoğan said on April 23, responding to claims that Turkish forces have started an operation against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) near the tomb of Süleyman Shah, which sits 25 kilometers from the border and remains under Turkish sovereignty under a 1921 treaty.

“Right now, the issue is not about ISIL. The job of our convoy there is to transfer aid to the Süleyman Shah tomb. Our friends in charge are continuing the effort,” Erdoğan told journalists after hosting primary school students in Ankara for national Children’s Day.

Social media accounts regarded as close to ISIL had reported earlier on April 23 that six Turkish tanks, 12 armored vehicles and 300 Turkish soldiers had been deployed 200 meters from ISIL positions in northern Syria, quoting eyewitnesses. Same sources claimed the ISIL also reinforced its own forces.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu reiterated on March 14 that Turkey had the right to “take all precautions to protect the tomb,” following clashes between the Free Syrian Army and ISIL in the area.
Energy Minister Taner Yıldız also said on March 20 that there was “no difference” between the land of the tomb and Ankara.

“The tomb of Süleyman Shah is a rare place, being Turkish land outside of Turkey’s own borders. There is no difference between the tomb and Ankara or Sinop. The soil on which it is located is Turkish soil. Our armed forces are ensuring security and protecting it,” Yılıdız said.

The tomb of Süleyman Shah is located in the governorate of Aleppo, and sits 25 kilometers from the Turkey-Syria border. It remains under Turkish sovereignty under a 1921 treaty signed between Turkey and France, which was then the colonial power in Syria. The agreement was renewed after Syria gained independence in 1936.

oO.

this all depends on the reaction of syrian govt. now

it depends whether they hate erdogan more or ISIS . if they hate erdogan more , then not a good fate is expected , i suppose

Confirm what?

That "aid" has been carried out by National Intelligence Agency for years. If he had to confirm that a military convoy has entered a foreign soil which basically means a military occupition, It is NOT aid. It's heavy arms suppliment for the FOB at the Tomb of Süleyman Şah.

They cant all fit on the tiny base. They are probably going to secure the surrounding area. Looks like they will be fighting with the ISIL maybe assad aswell.

There are nearly a hundred ÖKK and MIT operatives at the area surrounding the compound right now, ı bet.

This will probably end up being bigger than just an aid shipment. It just takes one guy to fire at the convoy for this to become a big deal.

It has to be, there's no other way around.

i guess it would not be a bad thing for syria. ISIL members should be eliminated one day. it doesn't matter who do the job. but in long term if turkey starts to continue the occupation of syria , they should face the consequences . turkey is living in a glass house they shouldn't have thrown stone in the first place.

Excatly. But sort of consequence are we talking about?

turkey may face terrorist attacks in their own land. form my point of view , ISIL has the power to do some acts in border cities. on the other hand this situation may cause some serious conflicts in turkeys kurdistan they also have the potential to do some military acts

Some news here, there are claims that the convoy was ambushed by ISIL.

Those photo is taken by a local news agency. This was the convoy heading to the Tomb. I see 4x Kirpi MRAPs among with logistic trucks.

There's no Turkey's Kurdistan or sth. But we have Southeastern Anatolia Region and Eastern Anatolia Region.

I'm a little surprised , After Turkey shot Syrian copter and Mig-23 then how did they get the permission to do this ?

We didn't ask permission, and we don't need it.

In all honesty though, everybody (including Assad) knows that ISIS is a bigger threat so nobody cares. Also, this can be good for Syria as well, because local FSA units can take over if ISIS retreats (and it's easier making a deal with local Syrians than with jihadists), and Turkey projecting its power is also a message to the PYD/PKK.

And Assad needs the PYD to be weakened as well or else he could be facing a Iraq - Northern Iraq situation in the future.
