Why and how did I miss this impressive piece of work by Turkish Scientists and engineers?
Rail guns are the future and will replace the conventional guns.
personally I am in awe of this technology both in terms of its engineering, its lethality, accuracy , fire power and reach.
this is another forbidden technology like nuclear & lasers that the west jealously guards and will go at any lengths to prevent countries like Pakistan get their hands on it.

it is impressive to see that Turks have something practical beyond a conceptual design on paper or a computer.

The Railgun launcher is a long-range weapon that fires projectiles using electricity instead of chemical propellants. Magnetic fields created by high electrical currents accelerate a sliding metal conductor, or armature, between two rails to launch projectiles at maximum range of 7,250 km.

At IDEF 2017, the new railgun system is integrated in a turret which can be used as ground-based station, but the system can be also mounted on a vessel. The Tufan railgun system can be used for direct and indirect firing operations against ground and naval targets. The system can be also used against air targets and is able to destroy missiles.

Since many years, U.S. Navy has launched a program to develop railgun weapon system. The Electromagnetic Railgun INP was initiated in 2005. The goal during Phase I, a proof-of-concept demonstration at 32 mega joule muzzle energy, has been achieved. A future weapon system at this energy level would be capable of launching a 100+ nautical mile projectile. This launch energy has the advantage of being able to stress many components to evaluate full-scale mechanical and electromagnetic forces.

US military already successfully tested laser anti aircraft gun means no longer SAMs in future.

I would use laser as anti personal gun.. or against pilots.. :)

Sam's will always be relevant. Lets say Sam's were removed, The only thing the enemy would have to do is put a reflective coating on it which will decrease the effectiveness of the laser and you are in and out.

This will be just an extra measure (and perhaps more cost efficient way) to deal with incoming threats

All conceptual designs ...seems US navy is shelfing them due to cost

Amazing. I was watching a documentary the other day. One of the primary benefits of having such railguns is obviously the absence of explosive ammo aboard a vessel which is always a risky affair. That also means drastically less storage space required for heavy conventional projectiles. Also, the speed and range is supposed to be more accurate and increased.

The cost is debatable. Some experts claim that it is cost efficient as opposed to conventional warheads. However, opinions differ. This tech is in its infancy and still largely a proof of concept.

No doubt railguns are a marvel and equally good to know that our Turkish brothers are involved in such a hightech project.

China is far ahead in this field.

Awesome technology !! Pakistan needs to seriously look at this and I hope they start a home grown program.

The technology to develop a railgun is not that difficult, the difficulty is size and the amount of energy to fire. Chinese have put it to test trials, a big ship and half of the ship is used for the railgun. The one who manage the supply system and solve the size, will be the winner.
