Turkish Navy Mulls Buying Long-Range Patrol Aircraft

A US Navy P-8 Poseidon is parked on a tarmac. The Turkish Navy is considering the purchase of long-range patrol aircraft such as the P-8, officials said.

ANKARA, Turkey — The Turkish Navy is considering the purchase of long-range patrol aircraft to add to its fleet of CN-235 and ATR72s, navy and procurement officials said.

“The requirement comes in line with the government’s foreign policy priorities,” explained one procurement official.

Navy officials say the planned aircraft should be able to fly 1,000 to 1,200 nautical miles away from their main base in Turkey and fly 12 to 15 hours.

“Our current fleet may not respond to our future roles,” said one Navy official. “The new patrol aircraft should ideally have anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare roles.”

Naval industry sources say the Turkish description of the requirement would probably point to the Boeing P-8 Poseidon (formerly the Multimission Maritime Aircraft or MMA). The P-8 Poseidon was developed for the US Navy by Boeing Defense, Space & Security, modified from the 737-800ERX.

The P-8 also conducts shipping interdiction, along with an electronic signals intelligence role which involves carrying torpedoes, depth charges, SLAM-ER missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and other weapons. It is able to drop and monitor sonobuoys. The aircraft is designed to operate in conjunction with the Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton Broad Area Maritime Surveillance unmanned aerial vehicle.

Procurement officials say they hope to issue a request for information for the planned acquisition soon.

“We are hoping to see a competitive contest,” one official said.

But industry sources say the description of the acquisition narrows options.

“There will not be too many bidders, judging from the description of the requirement,” said one source.

Is there something comparable to the P-8 on the ''open'' market?

What exactly is a Patrol Aircraft doing?

Checking up on the neighbors of course:D

Those pesky Greeks and Damn Commies aren't going to spy on themselves:partay:.

Realistically an MPA is going to be used for monitoring maritime traffic. Non-friendly ship movements, fisherman, assisting with rescue ops such as a downed airliner, drug, weapons or people smuggling interdiction, piracy, searching for or monitoring migrant traffic and a bit of espionage on the side.

Our P-3Ns helped find a C-130 that crashed into a mountain:

And assist with counter-piracy off the East African coast:

There's a lot of naval traffic around Turkey and a lot of socioeconomic problems like wars, instability, militants and migrants that would necessitate an MPA for monitoring these domains.

This Job do CN-235 and ATR-72-600 MPA around Turkey for the Aegean, Black Sea and eastern Mediterran they are enough ! The long Range MPA is needet for the Seas around the arabian Peninsula, the western Mediterran and moroccan atlantic Coast.

Antonov and TRJ-628 came also in to my Mind as Alternatives for future long Range MPA, I also doubt the US will provide Turkey Plattform which can conduct ASW and Intelligence Missions in the arabian Sea as well north West Africa. It's possible too that the US would also refuse Integration of turkish made Sensors,Avionics and Weapon systems in P-8.

P_8 or similar Aircraft in Turkeys Hands could change strategic Balance in these important Regions.

for long range ones its mostly ASW (anti-submarine warfare) and ASUW (anti-surface warfare)
Turkish Navy and Coast Guard both have CN-235-100M, so they will have the luxury of using these for patrol missions
and specify the role of P-8 or alternative one as a main fleet support aircraft, hunting for subs to protect the future carrier battle fleet.

Sweet. We should preferably find other alternatives beside the US but the Poseidon is a well known reliable ASW/ASUW plane.

The Nimrod has been out of production for quite some time.
It was based on the De Havilland Comet, the worlds first commercial passenger jet.
Something newer is recommended :enjoy:.
