Ankara: Turkey does not recognize the annexation of Crimea and will defend Crimean Tatars

February 2, 2019

Turkey supports the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine's borders and will protect Crimean Tatars, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said at a joint press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin in Odessa.

“Taking this opportunity, I want to stress once again that we support the territorial integrity and inviolability of the borders of Ukraine. We condemn the annexation of the Crimea and have never recognized it. Today we emphasized once again that we intend to protect the rights of Crimean Tatars,” Ukrinform quoted Çavuşoğlu as saying.

The minister pointed to the position of Turkey on the war in the Donbas.

“We support the peaceful resolution of the situation in the Donbas within the framework of international law and we will continue to support the activities of the OSCE temporary monitoring mission,” he said.

Earlier, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had announced that Ankara will continue making efforts to free the Ukrainian soldiers detained by Russia.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he had handed over to the Russian side a list of Ukrainian political prisoners to be released and was awaiting a successful resolution of this issue.

Earlier, Erdogan had asked the leader of the Crimean Tatars Mustafa Dzhemilev to provide him with a list of Ukrainian prisoners held in Russia and promised to “speak to Putin” about them.

Last October, Ahtem Chiygoz and Ilmi Umerov, the deputy heads of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people convicted in the annexed Crimea, were transferred to Turkey. According to unofficial information, during their meeting, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin had reached an agreement on the transfer of Chiygoz and Umerov.

International organizations recognized the annexationand annexation of Crimea as illegal and condemned Russia's actions. Western countries have introduced a number of economic sanctions. Russia denies the annexation of the peninsula and calls it "a restoration of historical justice". The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine officially announced February 20, 2014 as the date of the beginning of "the temporary occupation of the Crimea and Sevastopol by Russia".

Turkish foreign policy is really confusing. They take one step forward and two steps back with Russian. @cabatli_53 please care to explain a bit.

You know It is politic. Actually, All states are doing same so I do not like to talk much about politic matters. Those speeches are mostly done to give some message to other side. Russia doing the same to Turkiye patrolling with YPG terrorists in Syria. Although the relations are crowned with S-400 deal, Politic actions may find some other ways to follow a different agenda. Not worth to discuss...

They both are directly correlated; you know that right? Politics and military go hand in hand in international affairs. If there is limited confidence in a bilateral relation, then that would directly threaten security relations.

finally the Anatolian Turks are defending their Greek Byzantine brothers (Crimean Tatars) from pagan zionist aggression, rather than stirring up trouble for Turks in China.

What has Turkey done to protect Crimean Tatars? And or what does Turkey propose? This is a serious question, even if hypothetical. Never mind Tatars have a better quality of life in Russia, but emotions and facts triumph logic. Long before Ukraine had jurisdiction of Crimiea, it was under Russian control due to a formality which was signed during Soviet times. Like it or not borders contstanly change. There are hundreds of regions around the world that has changed hands, been under colonialism or has wanted independence, however the strong wins and whats done is done.

A little digression. Hundreds of thousands of Russians died defending Crimea from Nazi occupation. No one tells Russia how to run its affairs, nor does Russia bow to anyone, this is just fact. Millions of Russian have been born in Crimia, defended Crimiea and died in Crimea. This is Russian land. Period, there is no negotiation or doubt about it. Russia will burn its own cities and starve itself before letting foreigners dictate terms and conditions. In all honesty this is a political stunt, Turks are forgetting that they took over Constantinople and ruled over many foreign peoples. Russia stays out of Turkish internal foreign policies and Turks should learn the same. It's laughable to think that any foreign contry will defend any ethnic groups in Turkey, so it's only logical the same applies.

More imperialist vomit from Russia.

Who does Russia persecute? Estonians? Latvians? Finns? No the fake Christians perscute Greeks and relatives of Greeks.

Alaska is more of Russian land than Crimea and Chechnya.

When Soros and Putin hate you, you know you are doing something right.

More imperials vomit from you. Can you actually address my questions? What has Turkey done to "protect" Tatars? When did Tatars need protection post 2014? And what about Turkey conquering and rulling Constantinople and many foreign people? Does Turkey get the 'free pass'? Turks also ruled over much of the region at one point so I would be careful with the word imperial.

.
The Russian Empire invaded Estonia 70 years prior to taking Crimea. And Finland was taken before Crimea. Yet the Russians believe they own Crimea. One of the last places to be taken was Chechnya, around the year 1860. Russia can't claim Crimea, which was part of a SSR - Ukraine. And then cry and rage and genocide 25% of the civilian population of Chechnya, in a false flag war.

Putin and most Russians are genociders. The worst sort. A good thing is many Russians are onto Putin's lies for wars.

This is literally the dumbest thing I heard in a long time. When did Russia ever persecute Estonias and Latvians? Those are independent countries that were once under Soviet rule, more ethic Russian died under Soviet rule that all other Soviet population combined. Your logic is literally retarded. Makes no sense or can be supported by facts. The genetic makeup of Russians and Latvians/Estonians is also very similar and many are mixing many Russians including myself have family rutes in Estonia that date back long before Turkey was a contry.

Alaska is more of Russian land than Crimea and Chechnya.

So what is Anatolia? This is extremely ignored, those lands were taken under imperial Russian control before Turkey was even a country, think about that. Many of the people's there are not even a single race but mixes of people from all around the region, the demographics have changed throughout history. Claiming it is not Russian is similar to claiming Anotolia is not Turkish. The genetic mackup and governorship has changed over time. By your logic Turks are persecuting Kurds and should give up eastern Turkey.

When Soros and Putin hate you, you know you are doing something right.

When you make no sense, lack in history, common sense and basic reasoning you know you are doing something wrong.

The Russian Empire invaded Estonia 70 years prior to taking Crimea. And Finland was taken before Crimea. Yet the Russians believe they own Crimea.

Russia does own Crimea as much as Turks own Anotolia. That fact may upset you but it's a fact nevertheless. It is under Russian governance and has been before your grand parents were even zygotes.

One of the last places to be taken was Chechnya, around the year 1860.

So there is now some unwritten rule of ownership? Does this mean Turks will give back Anatolia? Or does that arbitrarily rule only applies to evil Christian Russian?

More nonsense. Crimia was taken under imperial Russia, then it became the USSR in which Ukraine was a state, it was then signed over to Ukraine as a province when Ukraine was taking orders from Moscow.

Putin and most Russians are genociders. The worst sort. A good thing is many Russians are onto Putin's lies for wars.

Who invaded Europe and slaughtered Europeans for hundreds of years? Who invaded North Africa? Who slaughtered Afiricans? Who invaded and conquered the Middle East? Who started all those wars in the Middle East? Evil Russians right? People like you were ridding high and mighty when you were in charge now things are difficult.

Why would anyone want to live near Russians. They arrive in a location, become the majority non-female population, and begin to persecute the once dominant group of Greeks who have lived there under Turkic and Mongol yoke.

The Greeks need to figure out it is the zionist Russians that are their enemy, not the Turks.

The Greeks survived the pagans and Muslims, only to be wiped out on Crimea by those who follow the New Testament. That is pretty interesting and telling on the Russia part.

Soviet policies on the peninsula led to widespread starvation in 1921.[citation needed] More than 100,000 Tatars, Russians, Ukrainians and other inhabitants of the peninsula starved to death,[42] and tens of thousands of Tatars fled to Turkey or Romania.[43] Thousands more were deported or killed during the collectivization in 1928–29.[43] The Soviet government's "collectivization" policies led to a major nationwide famine in 1931–33. During Stalin's Great Purge, statesmen and intellectuals such as Veli Ibraimov and Bekir Çoban-zade (1893–1937), were imprisoned or executed on various charges.[43]

The Greeks in Crimea did not complain about the arrival of neighbors, only to find out their new neighbors want them gone:

Tatars are nearly identical to Greeks parental history, except for some Finnic and some Turkic/Khazar/Cuman/Pecheneg.

Y-DNA T had to have come from the greeks byzantine, as much of the other family lines among the Tatars are Greek Byzantine.

We gotta be realists the Russians took Crimea from the Ottomans both were imperial powers.

I dont see the point in complaining because the strong always conquers the weak. A growing Russia took crimea from an empire in decline and in the beginning of its end.

I dont disagree with your statements to be honest. Even in Australia the Australian Aboriginals complain about land getting taken.

This was my point exactly, the strong take the weak. No one has a right to tell Turks what do do within its owns border as the same holds true with other countries.

Once again more Russians died under Soviet rule that anyone. People like Stalin that initiated campaigns of starvation and conquest were not even Russians. The Soviets did bad things to people but Russians themselves had it the worst, the Soviet Union was also ethically diverse, there were millions of none Russians in power that committed horrific crimes against humanity.

As for the "New Testament" nonsense that is bigotry and nonsense on your part. Military conquest has no religion; military planners and strategists don't care about religion, I had family arrested and persecuted in Soviet times, the oppressors were not Christian and even taunting our family for our Christian faith. The ruling class isn't the same as the common people.
