Today, S&P decreased the credit note of Turkey into the level of where Greece is. Same Greece which officially declared its bankruptcy that has a dept to GDP rate around %260 now. On the other hand, We are talking about a country Turkey having a GDP purchasing power around ~2,5trillion$ which has an active and advancing industry, rising export figures, increasing capacity usage rate, ~8 billion dolar defense industry contract and 40-45 million tourist/30billion$ tourism income in this year. Turkey is a very small economy on a global scale and stands alone. Greece is part of the Euro zone and under the Umbrella of economic giants like Germany, France Italy and the UK. You may diss Italy but should ot forget that Ferrari alone has a greater value than almost all Top 10 Turkish stock rated corporations combined. The ECB guaranteed that Greece will never go bancrupt.

Turkey does not have this security shield.

And one thing, those problems you face are homegrown. You have a corrupted system where your president makes his son in law minister. You arrest hundredthousands of people. There is no division between judicative, executive and legislative. All economic experts say Turkey MUST raise interest rates but Erdogan doesnt understand economy.

All this combined scares investors away. Trump only throws gas into a already burning hut.

Wrong. The Italian - Turkey war was a war between Italy and Ottoman Empire. The ottoman Empire capitulaed after a few weeks and gave us entire Libya in 1911.

I think looking at this solely from the short term win loss scenario doesn't do it justice. The consequences of this whole situation may be bad for Turkey short term or even long term, but the US isn't getting out of this without a scratch either.

The US is essentially bullying an old ally, and using all manner of economic and other means to try and force the issue. Yes, short term it may help, but this will make the other countries see how unpredictable the US is. No one wants to be bullied and in the long term countries will try to move towards solutions that help them secure their interests.

Everyone has seen that if it can be Turkey today (for whatever transgressions) it can be them as well. So slowly they will start to work towards trying to ensure they don't fall for the se trap again.

when the Americans put sanctions on Pakistan during the 90s, it didn't stop the Pakistanis from looking after their interests. The PAF did suffer temporary capability loss but it eventually led to the JF17 program and other such defence related programs.

The fact is that even if the Turks do suffer temporarily, such a large nation with such a well diversified economy isn't going to disappear from the face of the earth. It will just force them (and many others who are observing) to rethink their relationship with the US and others.

The US isn't the only big fish in the the pond anymore.
