Turkey plans to build the largest mosque from a European Capital in Bucharest, Romania, which is to be completed within three years. Under an agreement signed between Turkish and Romanian authorities, Turkey will allocate land for the construction of a church by Romania in Istanbul, Turkish Daily Sabah informs.

The mosque was on the agenda of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who paid a visit to Bucharest in April.

The mosque, which will be built in an area of 13,000 square meters, will have a capacity of 2,000 people. The Romanian government approved the allocation of the land for 49 years for mosque building in one of the central districts of Bucharest. The land is located on Expozitiei Boulevard, near Romexpo.

The mosque will address the needs of some 100,000 Muslims living in the Balkan country, as it will also house a complex with a library, a Quran teaching school and recreational facilities. It will have the characteristics of Ottoman-era architecture.

The funds are provided by the Turkish state, with estimated costs mounting to EUR 3 million.

Bucharest already has 10 buildings used as mosques, but the new site will be the first genuine mosque, while the others were mostly buildings converted into mosques.

The biggest mosque in Romania so far is the one in Constanta, with its construction initiated in 1910. It was the first steel concrete building in our country. Constanta mosque was inaugurated in May 1913 in the presence of King Carol I and Queen Elisabeta.

The former head of state did not miss the opportunity to criticize Premier Victor Ponta. Basescu talked about “the time when Islamism expands toward the Balkans and our Premier decides to approve the construction of the biggest mosque in Europe alongside of which there will be a university for 6,000 students,” referring to it as a risk, “decisions that are at least reckless if not anti-national.”

“To build the biggest mosque in Europe and to create alongside it a university for 6,000 Islamist students, I find that exaggerated. I hope the Romanian state will not approve such a project,” Basescu pointed out.

On Wednesday, May 15, 2013, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan placed a ceremonial stone on a 15-acre construction site in Lanham, Maryland that will likely become the largest and most striking examples of Islamic architecture in the western hemisphere.

^^ Priorities.. Sir, priorities...

Could have easily opened a big university or, Healthcare institute with this money.. But that would not have given the fame this mosque and Islamic school will give.

Romania is not part of Turkey anymore. It is the duty of the Romanian government to build schools, hospitals, toilets, etc. Turkey is extending help to Turkic minorities because of goodwill. This cultural center will be meeting point of different peoples.
No but i am against the cultural center that can accomodate 6000 islamist students. This can easily transform itself in a hot bed of extremism and frankly i don't see the point of it in a country with 100.000 muslims.
I think educating people will prevent radicalism. People get radical because they don't get educated. If a cultural center is opened, then Romania can keep an eye on the teachers and monitor what they are teaching.

Maybe you should build toilets in your own country before making such big statements.
