Turkey to build military base in Somalia

The head of the department, in charge of the Turkish Foreign Ministry in Somalia, Emil Tekin, said that the decision was taken within the framework of an agreement between the parties on military cooperation.

“This military training center will also be an important basis to provide military training to all Africa,” said Tekin, recalling that the base is the first in Turkey in Somalia.

On January 25 in 2015, Mogadishu and Ankara reached an agreement to increase military cooperation, which lasted almost a year until it was approved by the Defence Committee of the Turkish Parliament on December 9, 2015.

“Turkey has been a strategic partner for Somalia. We appreciate the efforts of the Turkish president (Recep Tayyip Erdogan) to assist the Somali people”, said the president of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

On the other hand, Colonel Murat Yagan recalled that last year’s contract comes after two agreements which were signed in 2010 with Somalia about military training and financial support, saying that since that date, Turkey has been providing assistance to Somalia to increase the capacity of its security forces.

Tekin announced that Ankara also plans to build a military school in the African country to train both formal and non-commissioned officers, as the same time as he said that Mogadishu is willing to establish a military structure in order to fill the gaps they have on that matter.

not africa but the horn of africa more in particular next to somalia and djibouti (which is home to several foriegn bases)
it connects europe to the middel east and asia. is a major sea route for oil and trade.

We have to give our outdated APC and Tanks as aid to Somalia. Better then nothing, i wish we would give them latest equipments but we are not that rich country

they dont need to pay and we dont need their money.
did Syria,Yemen,Iraq paid to İran for your help also there is no war in Somali like these countries.

It's more Somalia centric. From what I've seen, Erdogan seems to think of stabilizing Somalia as some sort of personal passion project. His actions towards Somalia show that he wants to bring stability to Somalia, before he retires, so that he'll be known as the man who saved Somalia, when the world failed to do so.

Look at the maps there is nothing releated with İran directly but egypt .The route is important for suez canal. Europan countries and also turkey's trade and energy security is releted with this route to Arabian peninsula,Africa,Far East Asia and America.
We rent big land from somali like china did in ukrain and this base also helps the security of the this agricultral zone.

But in all honesty, Iran is the party to neutralize with this deployment...Egypt have difference of views with Turkey that are not life threatening...The only foe, if you can call it that is the rise of the Iranian influence as a future economic and scientific powerhouse that is not well taken by the Sunni state of the area..and particularly some members of the GCC.

There were rumors within (a couple years ago) that after NATO withdrawal from Kosovo, Turkey was said to have planned to maintain it's military presence in Kosovo. Honestly, I expect this to happen.
