Turkish Defense Minister has condemned Austria’s arms embargo on Turkey, saying that the decision will fuel motivation in Turkish industry to produce indigenous arms.

“We have slammed Austria’s embargo. I am sure that such steps will fuel considerable motivation for Turkey’s defense industry to create indigenous arms,” Fikri Işık said on Nov. 25, adding that Turkey overcame a much severe embargo after the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation.

The National Council of Austria on Nov. 24 unanimously supported a motion for the government to restrict the sale of arms to Turkey, the Austria Press Agency reported.

All six parties to the council backed the nonbinding motion, which urged the government to consider the “threat of armed conflicts” as well as the human rights situation when considering approval of such exports.

Good, now we focus on indigenous arms. Thanks Austria.

What important defence systems of Austrian origin are in use of Turkish forces ....??
or were in consideration for purchase .... ??

I think it would be GLOCK handguns

Good question I'd like to know that as well.

There was an agreement between TUMOSAN and some Austrian company for the co-development of the Turkish domestic engine for the Altay Tank. This is understandably frustrating for TUMOSAN but luckely there are many other alternatives in this area. Small setback at best. Oh yeah and maybe a couple of Glocks that wont make it.

Turkey should develop its indigenous industries and become a prime supplier of top-quality defence products to Islamic world! Its a HUGE market worth tens of billions every year.

Turkey should aim to take the biggest share of this market and also help develop industrial capabilities of allied Muslim countries.

Win-Win for everyone (accept arrogant Westerners who have no respect for Turks or their country).

As I wrote in Turkish in the "Çay bahçesi" section Austria supplies Rotax engines for UAV's that Bayraktar builds.. but there are many alternatives to the ROTAX 912 (100HP, 60-70kg) that is used.

HKS700T - 80 HP, 57.5kg - Japan
ULPower UL260i - 95 HP , 74.5 kg - Belgium
Sauer S 2400 UL - 100 HP, 68-70 kg - Germany.
Sauer S 2100 ULT - 110 HP, 76 kg - Germany
Arrow 1000 - 100 HP, 66 kg - Italy
B22D - 95 HP, 75kg - Italy.
....

Some of these are almost plug-and-play alternatives, some better, even if these can't be sourced from any place, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to modify a modern car engine of same power to reduce weight, or build one from scratch out of parts readily available within Turkey.. such engines aren't that hard to put together or manufacture.

Other things,

Steyr AUG A2 assault rifle
Steyr HS .50 sniper rifle
Glocks
...

Again with MKEK MPT 76, MKEK JNG-90 and 101 handgun manufacturers.. this aren't too difficult to replace.

I think this should be the last straw in Turkish relations with this tiny insignificant country of 8.5 million population. Their racism has gone over the limit.... perhaps ban any technological export there? and a stupidity tax on any food exports?

Plus Rotax had sold to Canadian company. So it's not Austrian anymore. And also the engine is classified as civilian engine not military type.

However there are plenty enough alternatives but the important thing is that we must produce our very own engines for every type of vehicles that were planning to produce.

We have seen one more time that it's very important if you are able to produce very critical parts of defence systems.

It reminds me the time of Cyprus peace operation. We got embargo than we founded Aselsan the giant. I hope this time we will achieve even bigger achievements.

I have faith in Turkish engineers, scientists and mechanics. We only need in strong will of our own gov. and no doubt about it right now.

its like zimbabwe imposing sanctions on us, i was thinking it was Austraila and was wondering what we did to them, but no its irrelevant european country i do'nt even know if austria produce anything significance... fvck them right in the ****

This is precisely why the Europeans or the Americans cannot be trusted, its better to develop indigenously or co- produce with friendly countries such as Pakistan.

Well if anything positive has happened in the defense industry in Turkey, one of them is the point when they decided to actually put 'technology transfer' and 'indigenous production' clauses into almost all tenders opened in this sector. The other as mentioned above are embargo's...

Come to think of it even in modern times if relations with the west or Israel hadn't deteriorated so much over the years, we would probably be asking them to modify our US hand-me-down tanks, and probably would be waiting dumbly for Germany, France, US parliaments to clear hardware already bought from them a decade or so ago... (yep they are slow deciders..) again would the Turkish UAV projects have completed so quickly?

Of course its better to develop indigenously but it is also good to have export versions and local versions of things that don't exist out in the wild, some western and eastern countries like to take things apart... (e.g. China)
