Turkey Setting Sails on Big Naval Ambitions

I think LPD is not really that a priority for Turkey. It has land border with Syria, Iraq, and Iran. It is also a bit useless if there is Israeli- Turkish conflict, as Turkey can use Syria land for transporting its troops with much less risk than using sea. And it is unnecessary as well if it is aimed for Cyprus since the dispute should not let the country to do any military action to solve it, very damaging for Turkey economic and geopolitics. .

Turkey should never get in a military conflict with Israel. They are probably one of the few normal countries in the Middle East that have been a Turkish ally for a long time. A country with great military power that is invincible for countries that don't even recognize it around... I am really sorry some people took over our countries and ruined good relations between them and I hope things will get better between Turkey and Israel. Turkish people have always been good friends with Jewish people who remember how Ottoman Empire saved hundreds of thousands of them during history, how it was a safe place for them during the Reconquista, World War 2 and the whole Ottoman rule- when they were really good presented in trade, economy, politics and life in the Empire. I have never heard of Jewish people complaining against the Turkish rule over them. I have never heard of Jews rebelling against Turks during history but I know a lot of nations that did it against us and back stabbed us during our worst times in history.

Jews never rebelled as they were NEVER in a position to rebel against the Ottomans.

Palestine is occupied by foreigners and must be returned to the natives as soon as possible.

All nations that believe in justice should never recognise this colonialist state, that does not even have the decency
to allow refugees and descendants to return to their homeland.

Naval power like LPD is only useful for archipelago countries like Indonesia, Japan, Philipine, and island nation like Britain or China that has dispute in SCS. As for aircraft carrier it is for great power who needs to do any military actions abroad like USA, Russia, etc in which the most potential one is Middle East as we have witnessed since long time ago until now. There is special need as well for LPD for countries like UAE that might need it to secure Arabian sea, Gulf of Aden, etc from pirates from Somalia ( including doing any special operation in Somalia ) or preventing any arms smuggler as it has responsibility in Arab league and interest to secure oil and gas route.

So for Turkey it is very useless by seeing its geographic location (in which has already got huge advantage in offensive position) and its actual need, beside that the most volatile region in the world is actually the Middle East in which shares land border with Turkey. South China Sea is the other potential one, but there is no Turkey interest on it. But maybe one, two, or three LPD is still necessary for special operations abroad, hospital, and command ship, but no need to be that large that can take 7 helicopters.

So better use the money to do other thing, like missile system, air defense program, frigate, destroyer, submarines, etc

Turk Brothers I think sooner you develop aircrafts better will be our footprint across the world ,world is known by ruling the skies and thru Navy its icing on the cake .Stop relies on US/Europe ,We count on you for wisdom, guidance and you should count on us .

Guys there is the mediterinnian sea, and russian threat. Of course we need fleet expansion and LPD

Using Azipod propulsion is very bad. I wonder who designed this...The general systems move back to conventional propulsion since azipod systems often fail

Pretty sure gearless electric propulsion is very reliable, and since two (Turkey will become third) navies already operate LHD... Your opinion carries no weight behind it.

It isn´t reliable. Thats the main reason why all cruise operators switch back to normal propulsion. Azipod propulsion turned out as fiasko after its boom in the early 2000th.

Queen Mary 2 for example skipped several cruises because the Azipods failed. Costa doesn´t order ships with Azipods anymore. The commercial fleets dropped azipods and moved back to the normal systems.

My opinion is carried by Fincantieri. Italias biggest shipbuilder and one of the biggest shipbuilders worldwide.

They haven't switched back to normal propulsion, and Fincantieri disagrees with you: http://www.ship2shore.it/en/shipping/fincantieri-chooses-abb-s-azipods_59490.htm

the customer decides. Costa didnt order a single ship in the last 5 years with azipod propulsion. carnival didnt order a single ship with azipods as well. Considering the fact that the largest civilian ship operators lost faith in azipod systems says me that this system must suck. After all they sail for profits. Azipod system seems to be unprfitable, otherwise our large operators would use it.

Turkey is buffing itself against undemocratic Egyptian regime threat whose government recently acquired Mistrals. Turkey can't risk of being passive in the case of another turmoil in Egypt and or second operation to Libya.
Turkey also have intentions to build a base in Qatar. Turkey built it's biggest ambassador complex in Somalia, that means LPDs will be crucial for power projection at Arabian sea and Persian gulf in the future.

Had better you dont make BS information about azipod (this is azimuth) drivers for ships, even US was considering to apply azimuth thruster for Zumwalt class to utilize contra rotating system , and it stayed in concept phase. Beside that it is quite reliable system and for a ship with a dock on aft, you cant locate conventional propellers, also there is no enough space and volume to locate engines with an inclination. With Azimuth drive , it lets engines to be layed horizontally in any configuration and delivering it to pods by cables, much more reliable than any other.
The only disadvantage is, its not efficient in high speed regimes, and expensive.
Well at first, had better you learn its either called POD, or AZIMUTH , while azipod is a registered commercial system by ABB.

Much simpler rudder system (propeller itself) , space/volume saving, easier installation, less complicated .

If we consider years ago, it wasnt a need and as you said, the money from LHD could be spent in frigate and so on, lets make it clear the limited resource isnt money but its human resourse and knowledge. If we take a look on Greek coast, Turkey is rather locked on Aegean coast, a LHD would be game changer when its sent back side of greece, where they really trust . Additionally, even LPD would cost a lot, just costed a little more

PS: Didnt hear anything such from Fincantieri as well, how come you appear with made up stories ? Gradually, even combatants are moving toward non-mechanical transmissions. The problems emerging in Azimuths are usually regard to installation, and high power demans in initiation, needs some critical systems to be shut down in starting.

No cruise line uses this system anymore in new buildships. Wonder why. All enw vessels in italy stepped back to normal propulsion.

It depends on many issue, and based on time, fuel prices, demand in cruise lining , comfort , affordability, the designers make an end decision. This is not solely about capacity, or whether its good or bad. Situation right now requires to use it economically, navy doesnt worry about economics.

Anyway, i still believe some cruise liners still use similar systems. Warstila, or other engine suppliers deliver diesel-electric systems, means that still there is a thruster but unclear if its podded, or something else.
