Turkey Says It Fired at Kurdish Forces in Northern Syria
  • By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
ANKARA, Turkey — Oct 27, 2015, 6:21

Turkey has confirmed that its military has attacked the main Kurdish force in northern Syria, a key ally of the United States in its efforts to defeat the Islamic State group.

The U.S.-supported Kurdish militia, known as the YPG, said the Turkish military shot at its forces deployed in the town of Tal Abyad twice on Sunday, using mostly machine guns. No one was injured in the shooting and the Kurdish forces didn't return fire.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutogluconfirmed that the military targeted the Kurdish forces in an interview with Turkey's ATV television late Monday.

"We said the PYD will not go west of the Euphrates and that we would hit it the moment it did. We hit it twice," Davutoglu said. The YPG is the fighting force of the PYD, or the Kurdish Democratic Party.

"Turkey cannot abandon its border, its fate to any country," Davutoglu said.

Davutoglu did not elaborate. The two reports seemed to conflict each other with Davutoglu suggesting that the Turkish forces had hit the Kurdish forces west of the Euphrates river while the YPG said the attack was in Tal Abyad, which is east of the river.

Turkey is wary of the PYD, which is affiliated with Turkey's Kurdish PKK rebels, who have waged a bloody insurgency in southeastern Turkey. The Kurdish capture of the majority-Arab town of Tal Abyad, and its subsequent inclusion under the semi-autonomous enclave has further irked the country.

The Kurdish forces have been a key ally for the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group in Syria which Turkey is also a part of.

Turkey and the U.S. however, differ on whether the force is a terrorist organization. Both countries have labeled the PKK as a terror group but only Turkey considers the Syrian Kurdish forces as terrorists.

Kurdish fighters expelled Islamic State militants from Tal Abyad in June, dealing a major blow to the extremist group's abilities to access supply routes across the Turkish borders.

Last week, Tal Abyad was declared an independent administration allied with the semi-autonomous Kurdish enclave in northern Syria.

We said the PYD will not go west of the Euphrates and that we would hit it the moment it did.

He just said: If you attack ISIS positions, we will attack you.

Turkey cannot abandon its border, its fate to any country
Well, except ISIS, which isn't exactly a 'country', but seems to have full protection of Turkish forces at western parts of Euphrates. This is not what I am saying, it's what Turkish PM just admitted.

Doesn't matter if ISIS is there, Iranians are there, or Assad is there. Turkish armed forces will protect Turkmen and Arab territory from savages. Got it?

Did you even understand what your PM has just said? The areas that Turkish PM is 'warning' YPG not to enter are all under ISIS control, which means, he is basically protecting ISIS areas from a YPG attack. No Turkmens involved here at all.

And about Turkmens, yeah we saw how Turkey helped them when ISIS was trying to slaughter them in Iraq, while Iran, along with PMF forces, lifted the siege on their towns (mainly Amerli) while Erdogan was busy transporting some more Nusra fighters illegally into Syria and running his mouth as always.

If they try to establish an autonomous Kurdish state on Turkey's southern flank and thus create a a new staging area for terrorist attacks in Turkey, they will be eviscerated. End of story.

Furthermore Turkey doesn't have a responsibility to fight ISIS in Syria or Iraq, we aren't the regions garbage men. Not our problem Iraqs military was incompetent enough to let this organization spread like cancer throughout the Middle East, the Iranian Armed Forces failed badly in assisting the Iraqis...they still can't control their country :coffee:

Mate, look at this POV if YPG captures West of Euphrates river. Kurds will completely cut our southern border. It doesn't matter who has the that area, it just can't be Kurds.

You remember the safe belt that has been talked months ago ?

We were going to clean that area from ISIS...however US chickened out.

They massacred 150 people in 2 bombings, one in middle of Ankara, if Turkey (Erdogan) was ever going to fight ISIS, there was more than enough excuses, but he simply doesn't want that because he doesn't see them necessarily as a bad thing, the fucked up logic of Muslim brotherhood gangs.
Iraqis are doing fine pushing ISIS back from various areas, if only thousands of them were not coming through Turkish border to join the cult, things would be easier.

Right, but I didn't tell anything beside the truth, did I? Erdogan right now prefers ISIS to YPG. Simple as that.

In past year alone, ISIS has killed much more Turkish civilians than PKK, it's another bitter irony.

Most likely not going to happen, but if a nationalist wins elections in Turkey, only then you will notice the change that will come with it and the dirty game Erdogan has been playing all these years, you won't agree with me now certainly.

Turkey is also striking ISIS. At the end we don't want YPG but also no ISIS.

We killed 9 of those scumbags yesterday. We kill them if they directly attack us, but we will not take the task of cleaning them out alone, we aren't anyone's mercenaries or scapegoat. Get that through your skull.

Do you really think you're the person to say what's in Turkey's best interest? If it were in Turkey's best interest to attack ISIS in Syria, that's what it would do. If it's in Turkey's best interest to stay out of it unless the racist war criminals YPG try to extend their territory the sea, that's what Turkey will do. If you're so concerned about terrorism you should start with the #1 source of terrorism in the Middle East - your own government.

Dude, instead of keep writing things about Turkey and playing dirty game to show its name next to ISIS, you can work on the development on your Mullah country and bring the change.. Thats the difference between Farsi and Turkish states. I feel sorry for you because the bright future of Turkey near future..

Why are you so much concerned about the Kurds and what the hell is your deal with Erdogan. Remember Iranian, Erdogan continued cooperation with your government and thereby secured you had food on your table when the entire world turned their back on you. If there is something I despise it is ungrateful internet 'warriors' of your kind who are either intentionally omitting to speak the truth or simply are a bunch of cowards or simply lack in intelligence.

To be sure i wouldn't expect a coherent logical post from heavily indoctrinated fools
