TEHRAN (FNA)- Turkey is seeking Iran's support for its fight against Kurdish rebels, as thousands of its troops press ahead with an air and ground offensive against militants in Northern Iraq for a third day.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu met Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in Ankara on Friday to discuss closer cooperation against the separatist rebels, who have also staged several terrorist attacks on Iran in the past.

Turkey and Iran have in the past staged attacks against the Kurdish terrorists, which sit on the Iraqi-Iranian border.

About 10,000 Turkish troops have been pursuing Kurdish rebels in Southeastern Turkey and across the border in Iraq since Wednesday, after 24 soldiers were killed by the rebels in the deadliest one-day attacks against the military since the mid-1990s.

The Turkish military says the offensive is largely concentrated against targets within Turkey but a few targets are under fire from its ground and air across the Iraqi border.

On Friday, Turkish warplanes flew several bombing sorties out of a military base in the Southeastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir, the state-run TRT television said.

The airstrikes were targeting rebel camps in Zap and Hakurk areas as well as Qandil, it said.

Iraq promised on Thursday to stop the rebels using Iraqi territory for future attacks against Turkey.

It was not clear if Iraqi Kurdish forces in the North of the country would again assist Turkish troops against the Turkish Kurdish rebels, as they did in the early 1990s.

The Kurdish rebel attack has fuelled nationalist sentiment in Turkey, with tens of thousands of people taking to the streets in protest on Thursday, calling for tougher action against the rebels.

Turkey's conflict with the Kurdish rebels has killed tens of thousands of people since the insurgents took up arms in 1984 to fight for autonomy in the country's Kurdish-dominated southeast in 1984.

.
turkey has been at war with the rebels for ages and they are still no defeated. where do the rebels have their stronghold and how they get money?

on topic - iran should definitely help turkey against pkk, its the best for both countries

.
Iran should show them the middle finger, they have alot of nerves asking us for help after the whole nato shield business...

.
Iran should support them I think. If they have asked us for help, then we have moral obligations to help them as neighbors. unless we want to lose our friends in the region one by one. Also, considering the volume of trade between us we need to start forming military ties too, but not now, later.
