Turkey's army said on Wednesday it had fired on al Qaeda-linked militants in northern Syria after a stray mortar bomb hit Turkish territory, highlighting the growing threat from radical groups over its southern border.

Fighters from the al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have seized territory in parts of Syria near the Turkish border in recent weeks, leaving the already fragile frontier even more vulnerable.
Turkey's general staff said the army had fired four artillery shells on Tuesday at ISIL positions around Azaz, a strategic area around 5 km (3 miles) from the frontier seized by the al Qaeda-linked fighters last month.
Turkey has repeatedly carried out such retaliatory action when fire from Syria has hit its soil in the past but this appeared to be the first time it had targeted ISIL militants.
The move comes as Turkey, a key backer of the Syrian opposition, faces accusations from Western allies that it has allowed arms and foreign fighters to cross into northern Syria, facilitating the rise of radical groups, a charge it denies.
Turkey has maintained an open-door policy throughout Syria's two-and-a-half-year conflict, sheltering half a million refugees and allowing the Syrian opposition to organise on its territory. But it denies arming the rebels.
The military said a mortar bomb was fired from the Azaz/Parsa mountain area of northern Syria at around 1:30 p.m. (1030 GMT) on Tuesday and landed, unexploded, 450 metres (1,500 feet) east of a military border post at Demirisik in Kilis province.
"In response to this situation, four shells were fired by two Firtina (Storm) howitzers at positions of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant in the Azaz/Parsa mountain," it said.
It was not clear if the shells caused any damage.
Fighting around Azaz between ISIL and rebels from the local Northern Storm brigade prompted Turkey to briefly close its border crossing last month, a lifeline for Syria's rebel-held areas which allowed humanitarian aid in and refugees out.
Divisions among the rebels have hurt their fight against President Bashar al-Assad's better equipped and organised forces. Tensions have been rooted partly in conflicting ideologies, but more often in disputes over resources, land and the spoils of war.

Turkish military strikes al Qaeda-linked rebels in Syria

ISTANBUL, Jan 29 (Reuters) - The Turkish armed forces attacked a convoy of al Qaeda-linked rebel vehicles in Syria in retaliation for cross-border fire on Tuesday, destroying three vehicles, Turkish media said on Wednesday.

Turkish troops opened fire on Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) positions in northern Syria after a mortar shell fired from Syria landed in Turkish territory during clashes between ISIL and the Free Syrian Army, broadcaster NTV reported.

It said a pick-up truck, a lorry and a bus were destroyed in the Turkish retaliation on Tuesday evening. There were no reports of casualties and NTV did not say exactly where along the border the attack occurred.

CNN Turk said Turkish forces retaliated after light arms fire was directed at two Turkish military vehicles. The Turkish military was not immediately available to comment.

Turkish jets 'strike ISIL convoy in Syria'

Reports in local media quote army statement that Turkish F-16s struck vehicles of al-Qaeda-linked group in north Syria.
Turkish fighter jets have hit a convoy belonging to the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in northern Syria, according to a local media report quoting a statement from the Turkish military.

A report on the website of Turkey's Todays Zaman said that Turkish F-16s struck a number of ISIL vehicles "after militants opened fire on a military outpost" on the Turkey-Syria border.

Al Jazeera's Anita McNaught, reporting from Istanbul, said the report, if true, would represent "a considerable and significant escalation" in tensions between the government of Turkey and such groups fighting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Turkish media have cited a two-day escalation in hostilities between the sides, but until now the Turkish military had only retaliated with tanks and artillery fire, our correspondent noted.

"These are fighters who on many occasions Turkey has turned a blind eye to," McNaught added. "...Turkey is now fighting against the people [who] they have allowed to pass into Syria."

Even if Assad gets kicked of his thrown. There are thousands of jihadist and extremist groups that want sharia law. They will fight also against Turkey if we don't comply with their wishes. I think Erdogan's plan was .. First get Assad out and then deal with the extremist elements of the opposition. But the thing to remember. When Americans kill Muslims. It will be forgotten tomorrow. When Turks kill Muslims it will be remembered.

So in clear words, they want their 72 virgins, no matter what happens... perverts... :disagree:

No idea what goes on in their heads, cant even imagine but for sure the lowest form of life on earth.
Despite that they make good propaganda and have many supporters in the secular west.
