Your liking would not affect the Maldives liking. That is why they are dealing with Turkey. Whether you back or not, they will do their job if they want.

Sri Lanka Back in Maldives

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa departed Wednesday for the Maldives to try to defuse the political tensions there between the ruling party and the opposition, officials said.

Rajapaksa planned to call on his counterpart, Mohamed Nasheed, and opposition members backed by former president Abdul Gayoom, officials said.

The Maldives was plunged into a political crisis when the entire cabinet resigned June 29, citing a lack of opposition cooperation to pass legislation on Nahsee's development plans.

The proposed reforms include privatizations of major national assets and changes to borrowing laws.

Former ministers accused the opposition of preventing the cabinet from performing its legal obligations.

Nasheed was elected in October 2008, replacing Gayoom who ruled the island nation in the Indian Ocean for more than 30 years.

The 77-member parliament, or Majlis, was sworn in May 2009 and Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party has 32 seats while the opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party has 34 seats and is also backed by some independent lawmakers.

Rajapaksa has been close to Gayoom as well as the new president as the Maldives maintains close links with its neighbour.
