Turkey continues delivering parts for US F-35 jets

Engine...
People say we will be independent with TF-X, what a joke to say without an engine.

Only five nations in the world can make such engines. People don't understand that engine development really is the pinnacle of engineering, which requires hundreds of billions in investment as well.

Do you think Turkey is African country ?

TEI having started its manufacturing activities with 12 parts in 1985, currently manufactures over 800 components for 40 different Engine programs with its more than three decade experience in part and module manufacturing

-- Rotating Parts (Shaft, Seal, etc.)
-- Modules (Power Turbine Module, Front Bearing Structure Module, etc.)
-- Fabricated Parts (Mixing Duct, Swirl Frame, etc.)
-- Structural Parts (Intermediate Casing, HPT Casing, Combustion Casing, etc.)
-- Blisk and Spool Manufacturing (Compressor Stg 1 - Stg 5 Blisks, HPC Spool Shaft Stg 10, etc.)

Blisk and Spool Manufacturing Technologies
Blisk and spool manufacturing technologies, recently being used on new generation engines, are regarded as state of the art and advanced level applications for aviation industry which are high tech manufacturing methods currently employed in only 6 countries around the world and Turkey is one of them

also Turkey produce GE F110 turbofan engine under license

also Turkey has developed TEI TS-1400 gas turbine Engine .... ( only a few countries in the world )

Turkey has enough technology , knowledge and experience to develop turbofan engine like GE F110 in 10 years
therefore Turkey will use GE F110 Engine on TF-X prototypes

and Turkey has started developing turbofan engine for the TFX

And, the most important part of it is to develop single crystal blades to withstand up to 2KC stress under operating condition for a long duration! And, TEI has succeed in it, and that too directly from base materials (Ni, Ti etc.) in 2016!! Now, it's a matter of time before the fighter jet class turbo-fan engine gets into fruition...

The following is a presentation from Dr Faruk Aksit, CEO of TEI, who worked in GE engine division R&D for 10 years after earning his PhD from Rensellar Polytechnic Institute. The core engine was ready by 2018...

And thats why im laughing when people expect a Turkish engine anytime soon, i'd be happy if Turkey can develop an engine at all to begin with.

.
There were also reports about Turkish companies shifting production to Bulgaria to circumvent the sanctions, guess thats no longer needed. Good news for the industry.

.
This timeline is well documented, fortunately.

hardest part of the turbofan development is not fuel seals and castings even Iran does that

hardest part of turbofan development is fine engineering of the fan blades, balance and consistent production of these blades to very tight tolerances

but yes even China has been doing that for years even decades so why didnt they mass produce WS10 until now?

because each engine has dozens of fan blades and they need to be produced in a very high number, the minute you go from small scale demo unit to manufacturing if your tolerances are not tight the whole programme just collapses because you can no longer produce consistent high quality fan blades, and we are taking precise engineering mass produced

so 2 problems really, fan blades and also fan blades high scale consistent production with low failure rate, now you are playing a different game

Just like the ignore button, I think there should be a button that filters posts by people who would take a 180 degree turn the moment our president comes all of a sudden and says 'S-400 is garbage, we are going back to F-35' so that we could have a conversation on the matter that is actually constructive and free of political bias.

It was a Good scam Europe made their Euro Fighter Jet , with Arab Money omitting Turkey
80% Saudi money , and they were given a odd 80-90 planes delivered "Last"

Turkey was given a carrot stick by USA and then when Europe all of it armed with Euro Fighter Jet , and Israel was given F35

Specially after how war was started at Turkey border

Looks like a big setup

Being able to cast Second generation single crystal nickel super-alloys isn't something to shrug. And Iranian nickel super-alloys are good for power generation turbines which can stand up to 1400C. Single crystal nickel super-alloys which is used in military aviation have to exposed to much hotter temps in Combustion chamber over 2000C. In any case both is huge engineering achievements and early steps to make modern turbojet engine.

Casting Second generation single crystal nickel super-alloys 10 cm prototype is first step, But Making 50 cm casting with cooling holes and other modern cooling solutions is whole another level of Mathematical Engineering. Which is already done for TS1400 engine. Making 1 meter casting with Similar quality is also whole another level of mathematical engineering. But that is not unreachable If You already made 50 cm ones.

Casting Forth generation 1 meter single crystal nickel super-alloys is what we need to Achieve to build modern Engine. But At this point of Manufacturing capability level, What I concern is having consistent appropriate funding to these institutions Not their capability.

I guess its all the existing order delivered by the Turkish company . any new order will go to new country unless the disputes over s-400 is over. Turkey is loosing billion dollar of business opportunity by ousting from F-35 programme. :(

It has nothing to do with S-400. Israel lobbied US congress to sanction Turkey over F-16 and F-35 sales after Erdogan soured relation with Netanyahu. S-400 is only an excuse.

S-400 fuel that and brought the sanction . If the S-400 were not bought Israeli lobby might not work .

If S-400 was not bought there be another excuse like Turkey bought a nuclear power plant from Russia or Turkey signed a deal with Russia in Idlib or something.

F-35 Parts Shortage Grows as GAO Flags Risk of Turkey Expulsion

Lockheed Martin Corp’s F-35 program was hampered last year by increasing parts shortages from its supply chain that “increased significantly” and could be further complicated by the U.S decision to expel Turkey from the program, according to congressional investigators.

The Government Accountability Office, in its latest annual report on the $428 billion F-35 program, cited progress in reducing outstanding deficiencies, exceeding 2019 aircraft delivery goals, reducing per-aircraft costs and changing the production process for the jet to improve efficiency.

Still “more needs to be done,” investigators wrote in the report on the production of the next-generation stealthy fighter published Tuesday.

Among key issues that need improvement as the program approaches a full-rate production decision in 2021: aircraft reliability, which remains below target; on-time delivery and better quality of Pratt & Whitney-built engines; and supply chain parts shortages, GAO said.

In addition, Turkey’s suspension from the F-35 program last year over President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to buy a Russian air defense system is “likely to compound production risks” until alternate suppliers for all 1,000 parts Turkish companies produce are found, according to the report.

Among the most serious current problems is the growth in number of parts delivered late to the production line. The backlog has “grown steadily over the past two years -- from under 2,000 to over 10,000 between August 2017 and July 2019,” according to Defense Contract Management Agency data cited by GAO. According to Lockheed about 60% of the shortages are caused by 20 suppliers.

About 520 of a potential 3,200 F-35s for the U.S. and allies already have been delivered and will have to be retrofitted as flaws are fixed at the cost of as much as $1.4 billion.

The Pentagon’s F-35 program office in a statement said the report “was completed with the F-35 program’s full cooperation and unfettered access to information. There were no surprises in the report and the items mentioned are well known.”
