Turkey accuses US, Germany of arms embargo

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey has officially accused the United States and Germany of imposing an arms embargo against the country.

Turkish Defence Minister Nurettin Canikli has said that “several U.S. and German companies” were implementing a “covered” [indirect] arms embargo on Turkey.

He said those U.S. and German producers were either halting shipments of spare parts of weapons systems to Turkey, or deliberately delaying them.

A senior Turkish diplomat dealing with NATO matters confirmed that some Turkish requests for systems and subsystems have not been addressed by the U.S. and Germany.

“These are systems we need in our fight against terror organizations,” he said, without further elaborating.

A European industry source said that British and French manufacturers could be looking to replace U.S. and German companies in the Turkish market.

“Britain and France have a more pragmatic approach [toward Turkey] than the U.S. and Germany,” the source said. “British and French companies may soon queue up to win Turkish contracts that the Ankara government finds difficult to procure from the U.S. and German companies.”

Ankara has been at odds with Washington over U.S. support for Syrian Kurds in their fight against the Islamic State group. Turkey views Syrian Kurds as a terrorist group while the U.S. considers them allies in fighting radical Islamic militants in Syria.

Turkey’s ties with Germany too have been badly stained this year after several rounds of allegations against Turkey over human rights violations. Germany advocates that the European Union should stop membership talks with Turkey.

While I'm not too fond of Bokdil either, he does have a point here.

The US has long pushed a covered ambargo on Turkey we all know it. I mean, as a simple example, why wouldn't it sell Turkey any Reapers or Predators? Because they don't want us using them on the PKK/YPD/YPG.

Yeah that's true, I meant the other parts where he calls the PKK "Kurds", says they're fighting ISIS instead of the truth which is they're fighting everyone, for territory, etc. The article is biased and anti-Turkey, as usual for Bokdil.

Cause there is a long going UNO discussion about the use of unmanned vehicles of all kind;
that's their argument.

US uses UAVs/UCAVs all the time. There's no moral ground that they can hold in not selling them to Turkey to fight a terrorist group that the US itself classifies as "terrorist" as well. I wish Turkey could be just half as hypocritical in its own foreign policy. We'd gain so much.

To be honest it seems like Turkey is kissing US A**.

We need politicians with balls that can say to the USA:
"Either you sell us these and treat us like a real ally, or we shut down all your bases in Turkey and kick you out."

This is shameful, Turkey is not some banana republic it's the 8th strongest military in the world.

What do we gain by that other than feeding our own pride? The US spends more on defense than the next half a dozen countries combined. It's the world's sole superpower. If they can't use the bases in Turkey, they will use/open new bases in Cyprus. Greece, Bulgaria, Iraq, Syria, Georgia, Afghanistan, etc.

Pride will get us isolated in this world. People have pride. Counties cannot afford to have pride. Politics is not for the emotionally shallow or faint hearted. It's the patience, cunning, flexibility and pragmatism that will make us rise again as an empire. We're already doing the right thing by investing heavily on national defense technology and starting to dump the petro-dollar. Too much anti-Americanism too sudden can and will hurt us.

Who cares the US can already use bases in Cyprus, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwai, Qatar and many other locations.

It's not a matter of pride, it's a matter of showing some balls.

USA and Germany are like the school bully, they will keep pushing Turkey around FOREVER, unless Turkey says enough is enough there are consequences to your actions.

Turkey is already doing that: Buying the S-400 from Russia, granting Russian companies the bid to build nuclear powerplants, the ongoing operations in Syria and Iraq targeting forces backed by the US, refugee traffic to Europe, limiting US military presence in the Black Sea, etc etc.
