AMERICA: Donald Trump’s eldest son triggered an online storm with a tweet comparing Syrian refugees to a bowl containing an assortment of tainted and untainted candies.

“This image says it all,” Donald Trump Jr, 38, wrote Monday, in a tweet showing a picture of a white bowl filled with the popular, rainbow-colored Skittles candies.

Written above the image is: “If I had a bowl of skittles and I told you just three would kill you. Would you take a handful? That’s our Syria refugee problem.”

The Twitter post — showing the familiar “Trump-Pence 2016” logo with the presidential campaign slogan “Make America Great Again!” — was met with immediate scorn from users of the popular micro-blogging site.

“I’m not even big on Skittles but now I will buy up every single packet,” wrote @SarahSahim.

“Is Donald Trump’s new campaign slogan “Fear The Rainbow”? wrote Twitter user @AngrySalmond.

Donald Trump, the 2016 Republican presidential candidate, has sparked waves of criticism with comments on race, immigrants and refugees, including calling for a ban on Muslim travelers to the United States.

Equally controversial was his pronouncement last year that many Mexican immigrants were drug smugglers and rapists.

The brash businessman also is strongly opposed to plans by President Barack Obama to allow 10,000 Syrian refugees into the United States by the end of this month.

Syria is in the grip of the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II, amid an exodus of more than 4.8 million fleeing the war-torn country.

The United States, which has a long tradition of taking in refugees, has been criticised for its slow response to the Syrian crisis.

Donald Trump's eldest son has caused uproar on social media by comparing Syrian refugees to the fruit-flavoured sweets Skittles.

Trying to suggest the US should not accept any refugees, Donald Trump Jr asked the question:

"If I had a bowl of skittles and I told you just three would kill you, would you take a handful?''

"That's our Syrian refugee problem."

He added: "This image says it all. Let's end the politically correct agenda that doesn't put America first."

The food analogy has been used before to imply that, if a few people in a group are bad, it would be dangerous to take a single one in.

The language in Donald Jr's tweet was used in a post by conservative radio host Joe Walsh in August.

But following tweet by the Republican presidential candidate's son, the company that owns Skittles, Wrigley, stepped in.

"Skittles are candy. Refugees are people," said Denise Young, vice-president of corporate affairs for Wrigley America.

"We don't feel it is an appropriate analogy," she added. "We will respectfully refrain from further commentary as anything we say could be misinterpreted as marketing."

There has been no reaction from the campaigns of the main presidential candidates, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Angered by Donald Jr's statement, however, some people posted images of child refugees on their Twitter feeds.

Many of the posts both mocked the comparison and tried to highlight the plight of Syrians caught up in their country's civil war.

In a tongue-in-cheek article, Washington Post journalist Philip Bump did some calculations around Donald Jr's statement, using data showing that the annual chance that an American would be murdered by a foreign-born terrorist was 1 in 3,609,709.

Based on his sums, it would take about one and a half Olympic swimming pools of Skittles in order to find three killers.

Some people on Twitter used the meme to reflect on their feelings about the 2016 presidential race.

But many supporters of Trump and right wing commentators welcomed his son's message and hit out at the criticism online, referring to recent attacks in the US.
