DONALD TRUMP may have won his trade battle with the EU, after Germany said they are ready to discuss dropping EU tariffs on US cars, which currently stand at 10 percent.

The German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Peter Altmaier, told Austrian public broadcaster ORF on Friday that Germany is willing to come to the table to ease trade tensions with the US.

Mr Altmaier said: “We are ready to talk about low, equal duties on cars.

“This would be the best solution for everyone.”

Mr Altmaier’s surprise comments came after an EU trade ministers meeting in Innsbruck.

US duty on imports from the EU is only 2.5 percent, resulting in a trade deficit for the US.

President Trump previously threatened to slap tariffs on German cars, starting a trade war with EU, unless the bloc changed their tariffs.

He said: “The European Union is possibly as bad as China, only smaller.

“They send a Mercedes in, we can’t send our cars in.”

The tough talk seems to have worked wonders with the EU, who are now scrambling to resolve the issue.

EU Trade Chief Cecilia Malmström warned yesterday American tariffs on European cars “could absolutely happen” and she is “waiting for US reactions” on an EU proposal.

She said trade experts from both sides will hold discussions “later this month” and meet with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer at the end of November to try and avoid an escalation.

Now that USMCA/ex-NAFTA all settled...this is the next appropriate thing to settle...to add even more long term pressure against China from US perspective.

  • Auto-related trade currently accounts for some 10% of total trade between the EU and US.
  • Today, the United States is the third biggest exporter of passenger cars to the European Union: 20% of the total value of US car exports heads for the EU, representing 15.3% of EU car imports by value.
  • The other way around, the United States is the number one destination for EU-built cars, accounting for 29.3% of the total EU export value and 25% of US global car imports by value.

Express is a sensationalist and very anti-EU newspaper which is evident in its omission of key statements by Malmstrom:

She added that the EU is drafting its own retaliation list: “We are ready, and we have said so very clearly to the United States, that we will take measures,” the trade commissioner said.

Asked whether Brussels is willing to accept quotas that would protect a limited amount of car exports from tariffs, Malmström said: “The European Union can never accept anything that is not compliant with WTO.”

Trade experts have argued that voluntary export restrictions, such as the car export quotas that the U.S. forced upon Canada and Mexico in the new NAFTA deal, run counter to WTO rules.

The EU hopes that swift progress in the area of regulatory cooperation could avoid a tariff escalation. Malmström said she is “waiting for U.S. reactions” on an EU proposal, and said that trade experts from both sides would hold discussions this “later this month.”

But in all honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they capitulate. The thing with the EU is it's such a fractured organisation at the moment that whilst it's rhetoric sounds tough, it's even tougher to match it with action. Undoubtedly, if America succeeds all eyes will be on China, maybe India depending on Trump's fancy.

I completely forgot about Ford. I think American and think brands like Caddilac, Lincoln, Dodge, etc, completely forgot Ford. The UK market has a huge Ford customer base.

European Cars > American cars.

If you think Ford and Chevy are better than Ferrari, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Porsche and Lamborghini are deluded.

Not necessarily. Tesla and Cadillac say hello.

Ford is globally renowned for its legendary Ford Mustang cars. Its pickups are also successful.

Chevrolet is producing rugged vehicles, and this quality is important to many customers out there.

haha Trump is putting everyone in their place including the European fascists
They all laughed at him in the UN.

Certain developments suggest that Trump will have the last laugh.

Karma much? :P

The problem is not the tariffs, it's the fugly looking petrol guzzling trash the Americ*nts produce. LOL
