President Trump
reportedly uses an accent to imitate Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Senior administration officials told The Washington Post that Trump has been known to “affect an Indian accent” to quote Modi, who last year condemned U.S. activity in Afghanistan during a private meeting with Trump.

“Never has a country given so much away for so little in return,” Modi said at the time.

The U.S. Army is currently preparing to increase its presence in Afghanistan by as many as 1,000 more troops, according to the Post. Trump has already added at least 5,500 service members since taking office.
The Post's report about Trump using an accent to imitate Modi comes on the tails of his reported “shithole countries” remark during a private meeting with lawmakers to refer to immigration from Haiti, El Salvador and some African nations.

At an event honoring Native American Code Talkers in November, Trump referred to Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) as “Pocahontas,” which many consider to be a racial slur, to refer to her claimed Native American heritage.

OH! That's gonna escalade quickly!

:pop: Tay.

The indians will take this as a sign of great respect, and will be much obliged to be considered worthy of the honor.
This is in their genes.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.

Indian Accent, the great Indian head bobbing are expression that identify Indians. It is what it is and is widely accepted Indian-ism. How is that offensive to an Indian I fail to see.. It is what we do and how we are.

I don't see imitation as an insult. If the idea is to offend, the only one being insulted is the one imitating our accent 'cause he's gonna suck at it.

A lot of Indian humour involves imitation of our accent.

Indian accent

But now we know that Trump shops at 7-Eleven.

I Know all that RR but Trump being the racist idiot he is ...

in this case it might be mere monkeying more than flattery.

GN, Tay.

I am no fan of Trump, he is racist. But his body language and mannerisms are more immature rather than being deliberately racist.

I bet he repeated something Modi said and ended up faking the accent along with his words.

I don't know how much you have experienced this, but when someone is not very good at speaking a language you are proficient at, it becomes quite annoying to speak to that person for long periods of time. Trump may have become a victim of his impatience.

Or he tried cracking a joke about some incident he had with Modi and bombed.

Whatever it is, whether he was being immature, a poor comedian or deliberately mocking, he is not an idiot and he is the head of a state, that's why I would give him the benefit of the doubt. It's not an election rally.

Or it could be a very clever Indian trap. Embarrass him publicly over something seemingly innocent for some political gain because his reputation precedes him. The first impression you get out of Trump is he could have done it deliberately. Closed door meetings can have heated exchanges; some barbs, some insults, some anger, but rarely leaked. Why will a closed door meeting end with something leaking out which can embarrass either party? I see Modi having scored some brownie points over Trump.

Some Indians are yet to grow a thick skin with regards to their accent. But most who speak English don't really care.

Array Yaar, Trump is so much impressed, he wants to be like Modi....Modi is a reincarnation from mahabharta...tum logoon ko Modi ki shakti ka pata nahi....

Dekha nahi Pakistan ki na pak sajish ka kaisa jawab diya....

.
The only way you can understand Indians is if you speak with their accent , and then repeat it 2-3 times

Trump is learning how to shake his head while mean “yes”. That is @ powerful skill.
Must agree with you regarding this powerful Indian head shake.
Indians have this talent of appearing clownish without trying.
It comes naturally to them.
