Trump said that he does not want the US to leave NATO,
but the allies must pay dues

JULY 11, 2020 2:25 PM GMT+0300

US resident Donald Trump said in an interview with newspaper columnist Mark Thyssen that he does not want the United States to leave NATO, but the allies must pay dues.

According to former White House national security adviser John Bolton in his book, The Room where it happened: the White House memoir, Trump wanted to threaten NATO leaders at the 2018 summit with the US leaving the Alliance if they did not pay contributions of 2% of GDP.

According to him, after that, he discussed Trump’s threat to withdraw from NATO with Secretary of state Mike Pompeo; they decided to convince him to stay in the Alliance, but perhaps by reducing US contributions.

As a result, in his speech, Trump did as Bolton advised him – he declared his support for NATO, but criticized those countries of the Alliance that still have small defense budgets.

In an interview with Thyssen, Trump complained that 2% of GDP is also “too little.”

When asked by a columnist whether Trump wants the US to leave NATO, Trump replied in the negative. “No, I don’t want to leave… But I want them to pay their fair share,” Trump said.

So if they refuse to pay the requested amount, US will leave Nato?

Deep state will make sure trump lose this election.

I’m not exactly a Trump fan, but I do agree with him, they should pay their fair share.
Agree.

US provide security, it's EU duty to pay fair share. I am just saying the fact, security is very expensive for any countries.

EU enjoyed US economic and strategic benefits for at least 70 years. This is simple fact.

EU product compete with US product especially on commercial aviation, but US still paid at least 100 billions annually for EU security. That's fact again.

The thing is, EU can't protect their global interest, they need US. I believe China would like to pay for our security and global interest if US would like to just be neutral. Although it's not gonna happen, but I am just saying.

Why does even EU need US when is trying to destroy Nord Stream gas pipeline from Russia and renegading Iran deal? Why would you pay the US when US is jeopardizing EU interest.

Think bigger picture.

  1. What if US allied with Russia and see EU as enemy? It's not gonna happen, but at least US has options.
  2. What if EU allied with Russia and see US as enemy? It's not gonna happen, and it's impossible, because EU can NOT protect their global interest, not even regional interest. EU is giant economically, but dwarf militarily. France military can NOT provide security for her own global interest, not to mention countering Russia. While Germany has little to none military power. Others EU countries are tiny fishes.
So the thing is, US has options to choose allies, while EU has no options but US. That's leverage US has, Trump ask EU pay for it, EU will have to pay for it.

Same thing applied to India. India can NOT win 2 front war with both Pakistan and China. India will lose the war for sure. So India has to pay for her own security if BJP/Modi keep their aggressive foreign and domestic policy. India will have to pay for it in this way or another. Buying weapons are just one of many.

Well, even if EU needs US. EU definitely does not want to pay during Trump admin. That is a losing deal.
