WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has planned to announce next week that he will "decertify" the landmark Iran nuclear deal, a move that could lead to the potential collapse of the agreement.

Trump was expected to roll out a broader US strategy on Iran, in which his decision on the nuclear deal was an important part, Xinhua quoted officials as saying.

On October 15, Trump is due to testify to Congress whether Tehran is complying with the deal and whether it remains in the US interests in sticking to it.

If he decides it is not, it could open the way for US lawmakers to re-impose sanctions, leading to the potential collapse of the agreement.

Trump has long criticised the Iran nuclear pact, a signature deal reached between Iran and the world six powers of Britain, China, France, Russia and the US plus Germany in July 2015.

In his speech delivered at UN General Assembly last month, Trump called the agreement "an embarrassment" for the US and indicated that he may not re-certify the deal at its mid-October deadline.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned earlier that Tehran will only abide by the provisions under the nuclear deal if the other parties remain committed to it.

The Iran nuclear deal, officially known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, has helped defuse the Iran nuclear crisis and bolster the international non-proliferation regime.

It's still unclear if he'll actually go through with it, as recent statements from members of his inner circle are supportive of the deal.

Besides, if the US decides to reimpose sanctions, they'll likely be unilateral, without their allies actually doing it themselves. The EU + UK have already said they would find it difficult to reimpose sanctions, and would lobby the US against scraping the deal.

As it is, if Trump does decide to scrape the deal, sanctions won't be nearly as effective as they were before, if they're effective at all.

No doubt that the deal is about to end. Iran will no doubt continue enrichment. Trump has made no secret about scrapping the deal.

It will be interesting how Trump tackles the other nations part of the deal.

Just like Iraq, after the UN inspectors were complexly satisfied that there were no longer any sort of weapons of mass destruction left in the country, US invaded Iraq.

Now that the Americans are fully convinced Iran no longer has any kind of a nuclear weapons program, it's time for the US to also turn Iran into rubble.

I think the Europeans said they won't end the deal and secondly America's reputation as an honest partner will be effected. And it will discourage North Koreans to have a deal. It really doesn't make sense for America to end the deal except if they are planing to go to war with Iran...

It is a "saving face" move for Trump. He has promised over and over again to scrap the deal. He will decertify it as a symbolic move to show he did what he said. But then it is in the hands of congress. And I don't think congress would do the same. At least bot Rex Tilerson and Gen. Mattis think it should remain in place.

So Iran is offering limiting production of certain missiles and US is asking for complete intelligence on each missile (in order to optimize missile defense systems).

So if Iran does this....then it is inviting the world to dismantle its detterence capability slowly but surely.
